Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The candidate attempts to cover the main features of the maps, noting the changes in the layout of Porth Harbour between 2000 and today, such as the addition of cafés and shops, the replacement of the castle with a hotel, and the switching of the marina and fishing boats. However, the response suffers from several descriptive inaccuracies and vague phrasing regarding locations and quantities. For instance, the text states that 'harbour porth had a two boats, where passenger ferries', which misreads the visual data. The overview is overly simplistic, and the information is not fully developed or precisely reported, aligning best with a Band 5 performance.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The response is divided into an introduction, a brief overview, and two body paragraphs detailing the past and present layouts. However, the logical progression is frequently hindered by awkward transitions and confusing spatial references, such as 'From south side beach there was a castle which is not in use' and 'While on the corner side of road lead to car park, and lifeboat.' Paragraphing is attempted, but internal cohesion is often faulty and mechanical. Referencing is unclear in places, making it difficult for the reader to follow the spatial transformations without referring back to the prompt, placing this criterion at Band 5.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is quite basic and repetitive, with frequent reliance on simple terms like 'place', 'portion', and 'road'. There are noticeable word choice and collocation errors, such as 'plan of layout out harbour porth', 'size of poth remain excatly same', and 'private beach is transfer to private property'. Less common vocabulary is attempted with limited success and numerous spelling errors ('excatly', 'parking'). While the message is partially communicated, the lexical control is restricted, fitting the Band 5 descriptor.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but control is weak. There are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text, including missing articles ('harbour porth had a two boats', 'hotel is available'), incorrect prepositions ('on the above of parking'), subject-verb agreement issues ('number of boat increases', 'private yachts replace with location'), and tense confusion ('the path beside from lifeboat lead to that area'). These frequent errors can cause difficulty for the reader and restrict the score to Band 5.
