Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt by summarising the main features of the Porth Harbour in 2000 and today and making relevant comparisons. An overall trend is provided in the second paragraph, noting that the harbour underwent drastic changes, with new facilities inaugurated and others demolished. However, some details are underdeveloped or slightly inaccurate. For instance, the student states that the 'public beach which was in vicinity of castel is assigned to the hotel', whereas the map shows a new private beach for the hotel replacing the disused castle area, while the public beach remains in the north-east. While the selection covers key developments like the swap of the marina and fishing boats, the addition of cafes, and the hotel, some supporting details lack precision. This positions the performance appropriately at the band level for addressing the task relevantly but with some under-developed and slightly inaccurate coverage.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The text exhibits a coherent overall arrangement and follows a logical paragraph structure, beginning with an introduction, moving to an overview, and then detailing specific comparisons. However, cohesion is frequently mechanical and repetitive, relying heavily on transitional phrases like 'Scrutinizing deeper into obtainable information' and 'Digging deeper into the layout'. Paragraphing is used to separate ideas, but referencing within the text is occasionally unclear, such as pronoun use and ambiguous connective links. To move higher, the response would need a smoother, more natural flow of ideas without resorting to overly formulaic or awkward transitional expressions, alongside tighter logical progression between sentences.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is minimally adequate for the task, providing basic descriptions of the changes, such as 'demolished', 'widening', and 'relocated'. However, there are noticeable lexical errors, awkward word choices, and spelling mistakes throughout the text, including 'comphrehensively' instead of comprehensively, 'conspicuosly cognized' instead of clearly recognised, 'inaugrated' instead of inaugurated, 'castel' instead of castle, and 'veach' instead of beach. The range of vocabulary is limited, and attempts at less common words often result in inaccurate collocations or misspellings that occasionally strain the reader, anchoring the lexical score firmly at this level.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response employs a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, attempting relative clauses and participial phrases, such as 'which was empty in 2000'. However, these complex structures are frequently marred by grammatical errors, awkward phrasing, and run-on sentences, as seen in 'Details pertaning to how changes take place in a harbour and how it change from the year 2000 and look like in nowadays are delineated by the provided layout.' There are also issues with verb tense consistency, subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'the porth harbour have', 'hotel is build'), and missing articles. These errors occur regularly, though they rarely completely impede overall communication.
