Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the task by attempting to outline the main features and changes shown in the two maps of Porth Harbour. Key developments are successfully identified, such as the interchange of the marina and fishing boats, the addition of a new dock and amenities, and the replacement of the castle with a hotel. However, some aspects are under-developed or presented in a somewhat disjointed manner, such as the vague mention of passenger ferries and the somewhat informal commentary regarding commercialisation. While an overview is attempted at the beginning and end, the development of ideas lacks the complete clarity and balance expected at higher bands.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with paragraphs dividing the introduction, body details, and conclusion. However, the progression of ideas is frequently hindered by faulty or mechanical cohesive devices (e.g., 'First of all', 'More over', 'In conclugen'). Referencing and transitions between sentences are sometimes unclear, and the mechanical repetition of sentence structures makes the flow choppy. Paragraphing is present, but internal logical transitions require a smoother framework to guide the reader effortlessly through the comparative points.
Lexical Resource: Band 4.5
The vocabulary used is adequate for the basic demands of the task, attempting some less common items such as 'capitalisem' (capitalism), 'interchange', and 'privatisation'. However, there are numerous noticeable errors in word choice, spelling (e.g., 'digram', 'hotal', 'shopes', 'opposet', 'conclugen', 'busynes'), and word formation. These inaccuracies and misspellings occasionally impede smooth communication, restricting the lexical score. To progress, the writer needs to expand their range of precise functional vocabulary for describing map changes and eliminate spelling errors.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The writing shows an attempt at a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, but the grammatical control is weak. There are frequent errors in verb forms and tenses (e.g., 'represent', 'have add', 'is build', 'remain' vs 'reman', 'is interchange'), articles ('on the place of castel'), and pluralisation. These errors require some effort from the reader to decode the intended meaning, though basic communication is generally maintained. Improving subject-verb agreement and prepositional patterns will be essential for raising grammatical accuracy.
