IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The plans below show a harbour in 2000 and how it looks today.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The blueprints demonstrates a harbour in 2000 and how it looks in contemporory era. Porth harbour in 2000 was more practical orientated. However, today it is more focussed on leisure.
One major and significant change in the contemporoy harbour is the replacement of the disused castle with a hotel. Consequently, resulting in more people visiting this place. Thus, creating a need for cafes and shops. Additionally, the public beach near the hotel has been turned into a private beach for the hotel. Furthermore, the allocated areas for fishing boats and Marina has been stwiched. The horbour of 2000 provided larger area for fishing however, now this area is occupied by private yachets. In addition, area allocated for dock in 2000 is doubled in size in contemporary harbour. New showers and toilets are established in today's harbour.
In conclusion, the harbour of 2000 provided less features for leisure and entertainment and was more work oriented. In contrast, today's harbour is providing a perfect place where one can spend their vacations.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The response successfully addresses all parts of the task by providing a clear overview of the main changes between the two map panels and making relevant comparisons, such as noting that the harbour shifted from being work-oriented to leisure-focused. Key spatial transformations are reported, including the replacement of the disused castle with a hotel and the switching of the fishing boats and marina areas. The position and ideas are clear throughout, fulfilling the expectations for this band. While the overview is well-crafted, some supporting details like the expansion of the dock could be extended slightly further to reach the top tier of performance.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear logical progression from the introductory summary to the body paragraphs detailing specific transformations, and concluding with a concise summary statement. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the introduction, body details, and conclusion. Cohesive devices are employed to link ideas, such as 'However', 'Consequently', and 'Furthermore', though referencing and transitions are occasionally somewhat mechanical or abrupt, preventing the response from achieving a higher band level. Overall organisation is clear and easy to follow.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common lexical items such as 'contemporary era', 'practical orientated', and 'leisure-focused'. However, there are notable vocabulary and spelling errors, such as 'contemporory' instead of contemporary, 'stwiched' instead of switched, 'yachets' instead of yachts, and 'horbour' instead of harbour. Word choice is sometimes awkward, as seen in 'provided larger area' and 'provided less features'. These slips in spelling and word choice prevent the writing from achieving a higher score in this criterion.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, but grammatical control is inconsistent, resulting in frequent errors that place the response at this band. Examples of errors include fragment sentences and awkward subordination, such as 'Consequently, resulting in more people visiting this place.' There are also issues with missing articles, incorrect prepositions, and subject-verb agreement, such as 'The blueprints demonstrates' instead of demonstrate, and 'area allocated for dock in 2000 is doubled'. These recurring grammatical inaccuracies require careful reading and limit the overall grammatical score.
