IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The plans below show a harbour in 2000 and how it looks today.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The maps illustrate changes to Porth Harbour in 2000 and in present.

Overall, it is clear that Porth Harbour has transformed now by the additon of a dock, cafes and shops, and an area for showers and toilets. A hotel and Marina (private yachts) have been relocated in place of castle and fishing boats, repectively.

In detail, in 2000, Porth Harbour contained one dock space for passenger ferries, but now it has two docks on the north side.

Marina (private yachts), and fishing boats have changed there places with each other, and showers and toilets are constructed on the north of a car park, that is now connected directly to Main Road.

Moreover, a disused castle of 2000, has been transformed into a hotel with a seperate lane connected to a road on the south-east corner. There is a private beach which is now only used by the hotel. Moreover, cafes and shops are built on the north side of the road, and lifeboat area is remained same in the layout of Porth Harbour (today).

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You identify the main transformation and make relevant comparisons, especially the exchange of the marina and fishing-boat areas, the castle’s replacement by a hotel, and the change to a private beach. The overview also signals that the harbour has been redeveloped. This covers the task well, with some features reported clearly, but a few details are inaccurate or insufficiently developed: the dock was not newly added, and the map shows one dock with an additional jetty and two boats, rather than “two docks.” The showers-and-toilets description is also unclear, and the new south-west facilities and the unchanged north-east public beach are omitted. More precise reporting of these changes would make the summary more complete.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, an overview, and a detail paragraph. Its ideas generally follow a sensible order, and linking expressions such as “Overall,” “In detail,” and “Moreover” help signal the stages of the description. However, the progression within the detail paragraph is somewhat list-like, and repeated use of “Moreover” makes the linking mechanical. Some references are also unclear: “there places” does not clearly identify the two areas, while “that is now connected directly to Main Road” has an uncertain antecedent. Grouping changes by location or by what was retained versus redeveloped, and using clearer references, would improve the flow.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of map-related vocabulary, including “relocated,” “transformed,” “constructed,” and “connected,” and the reader can understand the main changes. There are also attempts at more specific description, such as “north side of the road” and “south-east corner.” However, some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or imprecise: “two docks” mislabels the additional jetty, “dock space” is not a natural description here, and “an area for showers and toilets” is vague. Spelling errors such as “additon,” “repectively,” and “seperate” also reduce accuracy. Choose precise labels from the map and check spelling and natural combinations of words.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and more complex forms, including the overview sentence beginning “Overall” and the relative clause “which is now only used by the hotel.” Most of the meaning remains understandable, but some grammatical errors occur. For example, “in present” needs an article or a different time expression, and “have changed there places” has an incorrect possessive form and verb construction. The sentence “a disused castle of 2000, has been transformed” has an unnecessary comma, while “lifeboat area is remained same” has an incorrect passive form and missing article. Review articles, possessives, passive constructions, and punctuation, then proofread each sentence for a complete and accurate structure.
