Student answer (Band 6.0)

The diagram below illustrates the changes that take place in a harbour from 2000 till this date.

Overall, the porth harbour went under significant changes. While many areas remain unchanged like shower and toilet and car park in north west side, cafe and shops were newly built as well as public beach was opened too. Disused castle was turned into into a hotel with private beach.

In 2000, harbour was less developed with just one area for shower and toilet. Car park was availabe on both main and side roads. Moreover, marine private yatch aread was present in north while fishing boats were availabe in the south of harbour. Furthermore, there was a unused caslte in south east of harbour.

Today harbour has chnaged alot. New facilities like shops and cafes are built in south side near lifeboat facility. While fishing boats and marines areas has been replaced with eachother, a new dock has been built as well. Moreover, the unused castle has been turned into a hotel with a private beach. Public beach has also opened near the dock.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You provide a relevant overview of the harbour’s major changes, including the hotel replacing the disused castle, the private beach, and the exchange of the marina and fishing-boat areas. These are central features and show that you understand the overall transformation. However, some details are inaccurate or unclear: the public beach did not newly open near the dock; it remains on the north-eastern side in both plans. The dock was modified with an additional jetty and a second berthed boat, rather than a new dock being built. You also say the north-west facilities remain unchanged, but the plans show an additional showers-and-toilets block and car park near the marina. More precise reporting of these changes would make the summary more complete and better supported.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, an overview, and separate descriptions of the earlier and current layouts. This makes the main progression easy to follow, and linking expressions such as “Moreover” and “Furthermore” help connect details. The organisation is coherent, but some connections are mechanical or unclear. For example, “While many areas remain unchanged … cafe and shops were newly built as well as public beach was opened too” combines contrasting points awkwardly, and the repeated “Moreover” does not always clarify how the next detail relates. The final paragraph also groups several changes together without a clear spatial sequence. Organising details by location or by what was replaced and added, and using more precise referencing, would strengthen the flow.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use some relevant task vocabulary, including “harbour,” “facilities,” “private beach,” and “lifeboat,” and you attempt to describe change with phrases such as “turned into” and “replaced with eachother.” However, the range and control are limited by repeated general wording such as “changed” and “built,” and several inaccurate or misspelled forms make the description less clear: “marine private yatch,” “aread,” “availabe,” and “caslte.” Some combinations are also unnatural, including “areas remain unchanged like shower and toilet” and “public beach was opened.” Use the map’s labels accurately and choose more precise verbs, such as “relocated,” “converted,” or “added.” Careful spelling and collocation would make your meaning more consistently clear.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including a contrast clause beginning “While” and a sentence with “with” to describe the earlier harbour. The main ideas are generally understandable, but some grammatical errors remain. For example, “the porth harbour went under significant changes” has an awkward verb construction, while “fishing boats and marines areas has been replaced” has subject–verb agreement and passive-form problems. Articles and plurals are also inconsistent in phrases such as “harbour was less developed” and “one area for shower and toilet.” The sentence beginning “While fishing boats…” is difficult to parse because its clause structure is incomplete. Aim for accurate, complete sentences and check agreement, articles, and singular/plural forms, while retaining your attempts at complex structures.
