Student answer (Band 6.0)

The twp maps illustrates the diffrances between Porth Harbour in 2000 and now. Overall, There has been several advancements and changes including reconstructing old areas and general expansion in the docks.

There has been numerous diffrances that happened through the two decades. However, there are some that remained the same. For instance, the lifeboat remained the same with exception that a new entertainment corner has been constructed next to it that includes cafes and shops. Furthermore, the car parks close to the main road have not changed with some small tweaks such as the installation of showers and toilets just over the southern car park.

On the other hand, the old castle that was unused has been renovated to be a hotel in addition to the public beach close by the hotel being claimed by the hotel to become a private one. Moreover, the two areas for both the private ships and fishing boats has been replaced with fishing boats area becoming the one on the north and southern one becoming exclusively for marina yachts. Finally another major advancement is the addition of a new dock enabling the harbor to serve multiple passenger ferries at once.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You identify several important changes and give a clear overall impression of redevelopment, including the hotel replacing the disused castle and the southern beach becoming private. You also report the relocation of the fishing boats and marina, and the new cafés and shops beside the lifeboat station. This covers the main transformation, but some details are incomplete or inaccurate: the dock was expanded with an additional jetty and two boats, rather than a “new dock,” and the passenger-ferry service is not shown as serving multiple ferries. The overview could also capture the broader pattern more precisely, such as the changes to harbour use and added facilities. Your response addresses the task, though some features are more fully reported than others.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a recognisable progression: an introduction and overview are followed by unchanged or added facilities, then the hotel, beach and harbour changes. Linking phrases such as “For instance,” “Furthermore,” and “On the other hand” help signal relationships between points. However, the contrast introduced by “On the other hand” is not especially clear, and the final sentence combines the dock change with a claim about ferry capacity that is not well connected to the map evidence. Some references, such as “the two areas,” require the reader to infer which locations are meant. Grouping the changes by location or by unchanged versus redeveloped features, and using more precise references, would make the progression smoother and less dependent on formulaic transitions.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant map vocabulary, including “lifeboat,” “car parks,” “private,” “marina yachts,” and “renovated,” and you attempt more specific expressions such as “entertainment corner.” However, several choices are inaccurate or unnatural for describing plans: “advancements” suggests improvement rather than simply change, “claimed by the hotel” is not the right collocation for a beach becoming private, and “private ships” is less precise than “private yachts.” There are also noticeable spelling errors, including “twp,” “diffrances,” and “harbor” (the task uses British spelling, “harbour”). These do not prevent understanding, but they reduce precision and control. Aim for accurate map terms and check spelling carefully.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentences, including clauses with “that” and “with exception that,” and most of the intended meaning can be followed. Some grammatical errors remain, however. In “The twp maps illustrates,” the plural subject needs a plural verb; “There has been several advancements” also has subject–verb disagreement. The phrase “with exception that” needs an article, and “the two areas for both the private ships and fishing boats has been replaced” has agreement and sentence-structure problems. Capitalisation after “Overall” is also inconsistent. These errors are noticeable but generally do not prevent communication. Review agreement, articles and sentence boundaries, then proofread complex sentences to ensure each subject and verb match.
