IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The plans below show a harbour in 2000 and how it looks today.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The plans illustrates a harbour in 2000 and how the site looks at present.
Overall, many facilities have been added to the harbour. In 2000, the harbour was relatively simple, with few facilities. Since then, several features have been added , removed or modernised.
In 2000, there was only one dock, but another has since been added. The marina for private yatches and the fishing boats exchanged places. Another showers and toilets room has been built beside the marina. In addition, road from where the cars enter the parking lot has been relocated.
Cafes and shops have been constructed near life boat. Furthermore, the disused castle has been replaced by a hotel, and a new road has been constructed which leads towards the hotel.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You identify the main overall change—that the harbour has gained or modernised facilities—and report several important developments, including the exchange of the marina and fishing-boat areas, the addition of cafés and shops, and the castle’s replacement by a hotel. However, some features are covered only briefly, and one detail is inaccurate: the plans show an additional jetty at the dock, not another dock. The claim that the road from the car park was relocated is not supported by the plans; the main road and connecting road remain. You also omit notable changes such as the hotel’s private beach and the public beach that remains in the north-east. The response is 124 words, below the required 150, so the summary is underdeveloped. Include a fuller comparison of the key changes and unchanged features.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a clear basic structure: an introduction, an overview, and a paragraph describing specific changes. The sequence from the general transformation to individual facilities is easy to follow, and linking phrases such as “Overall,” “In addition,” and “Furthermore” help connect points. However, the final paragraph reads mainly as a list, with limited grouping of related changes, and the relationship between the road and car park is unclear in “road from where the cars enter the parking lot.” The overview could also guide the reader more effectively by distinguishing changes to harbour facilities from changes to the surrounding land. Organise details into clearer groups and use precise references to locations to make the progression smoother.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of vocabulary for describing changes, including “added,” “exchanged places,” “constructed,” and “replaced.” These choices communicate the main developments, and terms such as “marina” and “disused castle” are relevant to the map. Some word choices and spelling errors reduce precision: “yatches” is misspelled, “another showers and toilets room” is an awkward phrase, and “life boat” is not conventionally written as one word. “Modernised” is also broad when the plans show specific additions and relocations. Aim for accurate map vocabulary and natural collocations, such as “an additional shower and toilet block” and “the marina was relocated.” This would make the description more precise and fluent.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple sentences and more complex forms, including the overview sentence beginning “Since then” and the passive construction “has been replaced by a hotel.” Most meanings remain clear, but some grammatical errors are noticeable. The opening should be “The plans illustrate,” because the plural subject requires a plural verb. In “Another showers and toilets room has been built,” the determiner and noun phrase do not agree; a singular form such as “another block of showers and toilets” would be clearer. The sentence “In addition, road from where the cars enter the parking lot has been relocated” is missing an article and has an unclear grammatical structure. Check agreement, articles, and sentence construction, while continuing to use a range of tenses and passive forms.
