IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The plans below show a harbour in 2000 and how it looks today.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The two maps illustrate the changes in a porth harbour between 2000 and today.
In 2000 Porth harbour had two car parkings, one was accessed through Main road, which was on the west side and other one from the branch road, which was on the east side. To the north of first car parking there were showers and toilets, next to it in east direction was marina (private yacths) and opposite to it on south direction there was Fishing boats. Porth harbour had only one dock, where passenger feries parked, while opposite to the dock there was a life boat, which can be acessed through branch road aswell. There were two public beaches one was on the north side close to dock, while other one was on the south side near to castle which was Abandoned.
In todays Porth harbour map major changes can be seen as compare to the map of 2000, New Showers and toilets are install with second card parking and also second car parking is connected to Main road like first one, while fishing boats and marina (private yachts) location are swaped. Cafes and shops are build with life boat and unsed castle is now converted into Hotel with that southren beach is not any more for public, it is designated as a private beach of hotel and another dock is created with previous dock, so the total number of dock are two for passenger feries.
Overall today Porth harbour has capable of handling more numbers of passengers with new facilities like new Showers and toilets, Cafes and shops, Hotel.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You cover the main transformation and make relevant comparisons, including the relocation of the marina and fishing boats, the addition of cafés and shops, and the conversion of the castle into a hotel with a private beach. Your opening and closing overview also identify that the harbour has changed substantially. Some details, however, are inaccurate or unclear: the second car park is not described as being connected to the main road, and the new dock arrangement is presented as two docks rather than an additional jetty at the existing dock. The claim that the harbour can handle more passengers is not directly established by the plan. A more precise overview and clearer reporting of the dock and access changes would make the account more complete and better supported.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a recognisable structure: it describes the 2000 layout, then the present-day changes, and ends with an overall statement. This gives the reader a generally logical route through the information. However, several long sentences combine multiple locations and changes, making relationships harder to follow; for example, the sentence beginning “In 2000 Porth harbour had two car parkings” moves through both car parks, the road and nearby facilities. Some linking expressions, such as “while” and “also,” are repeated or do not clearly signal the relationship between features. Use shorter, more focused sentences and group details by area or by type of change. Clearer referencing would also help distinguish the two beaches and the dock facilities.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant map vocabulary, including “north side,” “branch road,” “private beach,” and “converted into Hotel,” so the reader can understand many of the changes. There is also some attempt to use more specific terms such as “designated” and “facilities.” However, spelling and word-choice errors are noticeable, including “yacths,” “feries,” “acessed,” and “swaped.” Several expressions are also unnatural or imprecise, such as “car parkings,” “in east direction,” and “another dock is created with previous dock.” These choices reduce precision even when the intended meaning can be inferred. Aim for accurate map collocations and check spelling carefully; the suggestions below offer more natural alternatives.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, using clauses with “while” and “which,” and the overall meaning is usually recoverable. However, errors in articles, agreement, tense and sentence boundaries occur across the response. For example, “one was accessed … and other one” needs clearer article use, while “new Showers and toilets are install” has an incorrect verb form. The sentence beginning “In todays Porth harbour map major changes can be seen” also needs punctuation and a more controlled structure, and “the total number of dock are two” has a subject–verb agreement error. Practise accurate past and present passive forms and divide long sentences into shorter units. This would improve control while retaining your attempts at complex structures.
