Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5
The response recognises that the harbour has changed and mentions some relevant additions, including cafés, hotels, showers, toilets and car parking. However, it only minimally reports the map itself: it does not describe the major changes in the harbour layout, such as the exchange of the marina and fishing-boat areas, or the new hotel replacing the disused castle and the beach becoming private. The claim that boats were “very small” in 2000 is not supported by the plans. Much of the response shifts to general comments about modern life, travel times and past difficulties, which do not answer the mapping task. Focus on an overview of the main transformations, then compare specific locations accurately.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 3.5
There is a basic attempt to introduce the comparison and finish with a conclusion, and the response mentions several facilities. However, the ideas do not progress in a clear map-based order. The opening moves from facilities to “a picture of real life map,” then to general claims about travel and modern life, before returning to boats. Linking phrases such as “now a days” are repeated and do not clarify relationships between the two plans. The text is also presented as one continuous paragraph, making the comparison difficult to follow. Organise the response into an introduction, an overview, and paragraphs describing the northern and southern changes, using clear contrasts such as “whereas” and “by contrast.”
Lexical Resource: Band 4.5
The response uses a small set of relevant terms, including “main road,” “car parking place,” “cafes,” “hotels,” and “showers and toilet,” so the general subject is identifiable. However, vocabulary is basic and repetitive, and several expressions are imprecise or unnatural for describing a plan. For example, “more facilities” and “boats were very small” do not convey the specific changes shown, while “seperate places for family” is unclear. There are also spelling errors, including “travell,” “habour,” and “seperate.” Build a more precise map vocabulary and use labels such as “marina,” “fishing-boat area,” “private beach,” and “replaced by” to report changes accurately.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
Most sentences rely on simple structures, and attempts to connect longer ideas often produce errors that make the meaning unclear. For instance, “In porth harbour 2000 many of the facilities were not provided.we discussed the facilities…” has missing punctuation and an unclear shift in subject. The sentence beginning “Now a days any place we go…” contains faulty word order and an incomplete comparison, while “one is provided less facilities and other is provided more facilities” has problems with articles, agreement and sentence structure. Tense and sentence control also vary across the response. Practise accurate past-versus-present comparisons, for example, “In 2000, the castle was disused; today, a hotel occupies the site,” and separate each complete idea with correct punctuation.
