Student answer (Band 6.0)

The diagram gives two different visual representation of Porth Harbour in 2000 and how it is transformed to look in present day.

Overall, majority of changes can be seen comparing two pictures, land the place is made more commercial, with added business facilites and public friendly.

Major changes can be noticied on the south-east part where, castle that was mentioned disused, has been changed to hotel, and the public beach on south side of castle also underwent change from being public to private, thus only available to persons visting hotel. on the east side where the land mark for lifeboat was only available, addition of cafes and shops was made. Previous location of fishing boats and of marina (private yachts ) has switched locations.

Meanwhile, although two carparks and the area of showers and toilets has remained where they were in 2000, additional showers and toilet has been installed next to car park in west side of marina new location. Car park has been connected directly to main road , where it was previously connected from feeder road.

On the north-eastconviniency and to accomodate more passanger ferries, an additional dock is made.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

You identify the main transformation clearly: the harbour becomes more commercial, the disused castle is replaced by a hotel, the southern beach becomes private, and the marina and fishing-boat areas exchange locations. You also mention the new cafés and shops and the extra facilities, so the response covers the key changes and gives an overall picture. Some details, however, are inaccurate or imprecise: the cafés and shops are beside the lifeboat station, not simply where it “was only available,” and the added jetty is described as an “additional dock.” The claim that the car park is now directly connected to the main road is not supported by the plan. More precise reporting of the northern dock and the facilities would strengthen an otherwise clear summary.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a recognisable progression: an introduction and overview are followed by paragraphs describing changes in different parts of the harbour. Linking expressions such as “Overall,” “Meanwhile,” and “whereas” help signal relationships, and the comparison between the marina and fishing-boat locations is easy to follow. This organisation is effective, but some sentences combine several changes without clear boundaries, particularly the long paragraph beginning “Major changes can be noticed…”. The final paragraph also moves abruptly from facilities to road access and then the dock. Use clearer topic sentences and separate the northern entrance, southern shore, and western facilities into distinct points. This would make the progression more consistently smooth and reduce the effort needed to follow the comparisons.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You attempt a useful range of map vocabulary, including “transformed,” “additional,” “location,” and “underwent change,” and terms such as “private” and “commercial” help convey the overall development. However, several noticeable spelling and word-choice problems reduce precision: “facilites,” “noticied,” “conviniency,” and “passanger” are misspelled, while “public friendly” and “land the place” are unnatural. “An additional dock is made” also does not accurately name the added jetty. These issues do not prevent the reader from understanding the general changes, but they make the description less natural and exact. Build a reliable set of map terms and check spelling and collocations carefully before submitting.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and more complex structures, including a contrast with “although” and a result clause introduced by “thus.” However, control is inconsistent, and several sentences contain errors in agreement, articles, or sentence construction. For example, “two different visual representation” needs a plural noun, and “majority of changes” requires an article. The sentence beginning “Overall” is a fragment or poorly joined clause, while “castle, that was mentioned disused” has an unclear relative construction. Capitalisation after full stops is also inconsistent, as in “on the east side” and “Meanwhile.” Aim first for complete, clearly punctuated sentences, then use complex clauses only when their grammatical relationships are clear. This will make your comparisons easier to understand.
