Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You identify the main overall changes: the harbour gains visitor facilities, the marina and fishing-boat areas switch locations, and the castle becomes a hotel with a private beach. You also include several relevant details, such as the public beach remaining in place and cafés and shops being added near the lifeboat. This covers the task well, with some features more fully reported than others. However, a few descriptions are unclear or inaccurate: the road is not described as being redeveloped to connect the hotel, and the northern dock’s added jetty and two berthed boats are not clearly reported. The overview that the harbour has developed for visitors is relevant, but could more precisely summarise the major changes.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction and overview are followed by descriptions of the northern and southern areas. This gives the reader a basic route through the map changes, and phrases such as “In addition” and “Looking to southern part” signal transitions. However, progression is sometimes difficult to follow because several features are crowded into long sentences, and the north–south organisation is not consistently clear. For example, the sentence beginning “It can clearly be seen in 2000” combines the beach, dock, marina, fishing boats and western facilities without clear separation. Some linking words, including “likewise” and “moreover,” feel mechanical or do not clearly show the relationship between details. Use shorter, more focused sentences and clearer location-based paragraphs.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use some task-relevant vocabulary, including “marina,” “lifeboat,” “private beach,” “converted” and “facilities,” which helps convey the map’s main features. There is also an attempt to vary wording with expressions such as “remained” and “demolished.” However, spelling errors and inaccurate or unnatural word combinations are noticeable and sometimes make the meaning harder to follow: “infrasturcture,” “exachged,” “maximum changes devlop,” and “modern art” are examples. Phrases such as “faced to each placed” do not clearly describe the relocation. Aim for accurate, conventional map language, such as “was relocated,” “remained unchanged,” and “was replaced by,” and check spelling carefully.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including clauses introduced by “while” and “and,” and you use past and present references to compare the maps. However, control is uneven: errors in sentence construction, tense, articles and punctuation recur and can make relationships between features unclear. For instance, “the changes took placed” has an incorrect verb form, while “the Porth Harbour has been better” does not form a clear comparison. In “castle demolished and bulit hotel,” the sentence lacks the necessary verb structure and articles. Several sentences also run together after full stops or commas. Practise accurate past passive forms such as “was replaced by” and build each sentence around a clear subject and verb.
