Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5
You identify that Porth Harbour has changed and mention several relevant features, including the marina, fishing boats, cafés and shops, and the hotel’s private beach. However, the response only partially summarises the plans: it omits major changes such as the castle being replaced by a hotel, the dock gaining another jetty, and the public beach remaining in the north-east. The statement that the marina has been “converted into fishing boat” is also unclear: the two uses have exchanged locations. Some details, such as “a lots of rooms,” are not supported by the plans. The response is 103 words, below the required 150, which limits the detail and comparisons provided. Develop a clear overview and report the main changes accurately.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a basic overall shape: an opening, an overview-like statement, details about the present, and a conclusion. Time markers such as “In 2000” and “In today” also signal a comparison. However, the progression is not consistently clear: the second paragraph mixes general comments about the earlier map with details about the present, and the final conclusion repeats that there were many changes without adding a useful summary. Linking is limited, and some references, such as “there” and “many things,” do not clearly identify the features being discussed. Organise the report into a concise overview followed by grouped comparisons of the harbour’s northern and southern areas, using clear references to each location.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use some task-relevant vocabulary, including “marina,” “private beach,” “car park,” and “cafés and shops,” so the reader can recognise several features. However, the range is limited and some choices are inaccurate or imprecise: “farm change” does not describe a harbour plan, “rooms” is not an appropriate label for the facilities, and “converted into fishing boat” does not express the exchange of locations clearly. There are also noticeable spelling and word-form errors, including “toillets” and “install.” Use precise map vocabulary such as “facility,” “relocated,” “replaced,” and “remained,” and check spelling and collocations before submitting.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
Most sentences are short and simple, with only a limited attempt to combine ideas, as in “Today, Marina has been converted into fishing boat as well as some toilet has been build…” This sentence contains several grammatical problems, including missing articles, incorrect singular/plural agreement, and an incorrect passive verb form. Other examples include “The map illustrate” and “Many facilities has added,” where subject–verb agreement and passive construction are not controlled. Punctuation and spacing are also inconsistent, particularly after full stops and commas. Practise accurate present and past passive forms for describing changes, and check articles and plural nouns. Adding a few correctly formed complex sentences would also help express comparisons more clearly.
