Student answer (Band 5.5)

Both plans below are basically the latest and old map of Poth Harbour. The plan below displays a comprative difference between the previous map of harbour of 2000 and the latest map of harbour.

First of all we start with the things those remain same as they are in 2000.Those things are public beach which is in the top east corner it is still at the same place.Car parks are still at same on west in right of main road .The place of lifebaot and the road connect is still same .Now we will discuss the things those got some upgrades .The dock which is in the middle is upgraded from one dock to two dock. Also the showers and toilet area is added with the second car park in buttom west .The place of fishing boats and marine (private yachts ) area is replaced with each other in new map .Oh i forgot about the private beach and passenger ferries which are still same and at the same place .There are two new things added in the new map .The Hotel which is on buttom in east just below the private beach and cafes and shopes are also added in the new map just in right of lifeboat .

This is the basic overview of the plan which is mentioned on top

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You identify several important changes, including the exchange of the fishing-boat and yacht areas, the addition of cafés and shops, and the replacement of the disused castle by a hotel. You also note that the north-eastern public beach and lifeboat area remain. However, some details are inaccurate or unclear: the dock is not simply changed “from one dock to two dock”; it gains an additional jetty and has two boats berthed. The passenger ferries are not identified as remaining in the same place in the current plan, and the hotel replaces the castle rather than sitting below the private beach. A clearer overview of the main transformation, followed by more precise comparisons of locations, would make the account more complete and developed.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has an overall sequence: it first mentions features that remain, then changes and additions. This gives the reader a basic route through the comparison, and phrases such as “First of all” and “Now we will discuss” signal transitions. However, the organisation is weakened by the conversational asides (“Oh i forgot”) and the closing sentence, which repeats that this is an overview rather than summarising the main changes. Some references are also difficult to follow, such as “the place of lifebaot and the road connect” and “the private beach and passenger ferries which are still same.” Grouping the information into a clear overview and paragraphs on unchanged and changed features, with more precise linking, would improve progression.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant map vocabulary, including “public beach,” “main road,” “car parks,” “lifeboat,” and “private yachts,” so the reader can recognise many of the features being compared. There are also attempts at more specific language, such as “replaced with each other” and “upgrades.” However, several choices are inaccurate or unnatural for a formal map report: “latest and old map,” “comparitive difference,” “dock … upgraded,” and “things those got some upgrades.” Spelling errors such as “Poth,” “lifebaot,” “buttom,” and “shopes” also reduce precision. Use standard terms such as “the earlier plan,” “the current layout,” and “the facilities were added,” and check spelling carefully.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple statements and longer sentences, for example, “The place of fishing boats and marine … area is replaced with each other in new map.” This shows some effort to connect information, but control is inconsistent. Errors include missing or incorrect articles and prepositions (“at same place,” “in buttom west”), agreement and verb forms (“area is replaced”), and sentence boundaries, as in “public beach which is in the top east corner it is still at the same place.” Capitalisation and punctuation are also inconsistent. These problems sometimes make relationships between features unclear, although the general meaning is usually recoverable. Practise accurate comparative structures, such as “The marina was moved to the southern basin, while the fishing boats were relocated to the northern one.”
