Student answer (Band 6.0)

The diagram illustrate the Porth Harbour before it was renovated in 2000 and new look in the present.

Overall, in recent years, Porth Harbour has added many rooms alloted for people wo visit the place, such as cafes and shops, a hotel, another dock and showers and toilets. There is also a changed in location like the Marina (private yachts) and fishing boats. Meanwhile, some features are still in the same areas.

In 2000, Porth Harbour had only a few infrastructure open for people. Today, it has two rooms for showers and toilets; one located in the north side beside fishing boats, the other one is beside marina (private yachts). Similiarly, it has cafes and shops now in south, beside lifeboat. The castle which was located in the south east of the harbour was replaced by a new built hotel.

There is also a change in location. Before, fishing boats were located in south part of the harbour, but now, it is in the north part of it. Meanwhile, Marina (private yachts) which was loacated in the north part in 2000 is now in the south part of Porth Habour. Although some parts were changed and made additional rooms, some parts stay the same. These are the car parks, lifeboat, dock, passenger ferries, road and the main road.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You identify the main overall changes: new visitor facilities, the replacement of the castle by a hotel, and the exchange of locations between the marina and fishing boats. The comparison that fishing boats moved from the southern basin to the northern one, while the marina moved in the opposite direction, is accurate and relevant. You also note several features that remain, although the list is not fully precise: the dock was modified with an additional jetty and boats, rather than simply staying the same. Some details are underdeveloped or unclear, such as the hotel beach becoming private and the public beach remaining in the north-east. A more complete overview and more exact comparisons would strengthen the report.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction and overview are followed by paragraphs describing facilities and changes in location. This gives the reader a generally logical route through the maps. Linking expressions such as “Overall,” “Meanwhile,” and “Although” help signal relationships between ideas, and the repeated contrast between the two years is easy to follow. However, some connections are mechanical or imprecise. For example, “There is also a change in location” repeats an idea already introduced in the overview, while “Although some parts were changed…” leads into a list that includes the dock, which was altered. Grouping unchanged features separately from relocated and newly added ones, and using clearer references to the two map periods, would make progression more controlled.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant map vocabulary, including “located,” “replaced,” “beside,” and “in the north part,” so the main changes are generally understandable. There is also some useful topic-specific language, such as “Marina (private yachts)” and “lifeboat.” However, the range and precision are limited by repeated general wording such as “change,” “parts,” and “rooms,” and several choices are inaccurate or unnatural: “rooms alloted for people,” “another dock,” and “new built hotel.” Spelling slips such as “Similiarly,” “loacated,” and “Habour” also reduce accuracy. Use more precise terms such as facilities, amenities, basin, and additional jetty, and check spelling and collocations carefully.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You attempt a mix of simple and more complex sentences, including a contrast clause beginning “Although” and a relative clause describing the marina. Most of the intended meaning remains clear, but some grammatical errors occur. The opening should be “The diagram illustrates,” and “there is also a changed in location” needs a noun form and appropriate agreement. There are also problems with articles and number, as in “only a few infrastructure,” and with verb agreement in “fishing boats… it is.” The phrase “which was located” also needs a plural verb if it refers to the boats. These errors do not usually prevent understanding, but more consistent control of agreement, articles, and verb forms would improve accuracy.
