IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The plans below show a harbour in 2000 and how it looks today.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The maps illustrate the changes took place in porth hourbour from 2000 to now.
Overall, the area underwent significant changes over the period, becoming more developed and modernized. The noticable changes were the construction of cafes and shops and were the replacement of castle. However, other feathers remained unchanged throughout the period.
Looking at the first map in detail, showers and toilets were located at the 2 different areas around car parks and now southern side toilet and shower area is demolished. Marina and fishing boats exchanged their places.
Another considerable changes was that the small track started with main road and reached at lifeboat point but now this road have two tracks that reached at lifeboat and at hotel respectively.
Furthermore, castle replaced with hotel and private beach is used for the hotel now. Other feathers includes car park, dock, public beach and passenger ferries remain unchanged over the period.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You identify the broad transformation from a harbour to a more developed area, and your overview highlights the new cafés and shops and the castle’s replacement. You also report the exchange of the marina and fishing-boat areas, as well as the hotel and its private beach. However, some details are unclear or inaccurate: the southern showers and toilets were not demolished; a second facilities-and-car-park block was added near the marina. The road description is also difficult to reconcile with the plans, which show a road branching east from the main road rather than two tracks reaching separate destinations. The claim that the car parks and passenger ferries remained unchanged overlooks changes to facilities and the dock. More precise coverage of these developments would make the summary fuller.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, an overview, and two paragraphs describing details. Sequencing phrases such as “Overall,” “Looking at the first map in detail,” and “Furthermore” help signal the stages of the summary. However, some links between ideas are mechanical or unclear. For example, “Another considerable changes was that…” introduces a point whose relationship to the previous paragraph is not fully developed, while “Other feathers includes…” is an unclear reference to features. The first detail paragraph also combines several changes without clearly distinguishing what happened in 2000 from what is true today. Grouping the changes by location or by additions, removals, and relocations would create smoother progression and clearer comparisons.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use some relevant map vocabulary, including “construction,” “replacement,” “exchanged their places,” and “remained unchanged,” which helps communicate the main changes. There is also an attempt to use more formal language, such as “underwent significant changes.” However, spelling and word-choice errors are noticeable, including “hourbour,” “noticable,” “feathers” for “features,” and “modernized.” Some phrases are also imprecise or unnatural: “at the 2 different areas around car parks” and “reached at lifeboat point” do not describe locations clearly. Aim for accurate, conventional terms such as “facilities,” “relocated,” and “adjacent to,” and check spelling carefully. This would make the description more precise and fluent.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt a mixture of simple and more complex sentences, including the overview sentence beginning “Overall” and the contrast between the two maps in “Marina and fishing boats exchanged their places.” The main meaning is generally understandable, but some grammatical errors affect clarity. For example, “the changes took place” needs a relative structure (“the changes that took place”), and “Another considerable changes was” has a number-agreement error. In “this road have two tracks,” the subject and verb do not agree, and “castle replaced with hotel” is missing articles and a passive verb form. The sentence about the showers also shifts awkwardly between past and present. Review articles, agreement, and consistent tense, while continuing to practise complex sentence patterns.
