Student answer (Band 6.0)

The diagrams illustrate Porth Harbour in 2000 and how it has transformed today.

Overall, Porth harbour has witnessed significant changes over the years, including renovations to existing ones, construction of new spaces and the modification of an abandoned castle into a hotel.

In 2000, there were two car parking areas one near the showers & toilets on the northwest side, and the other one on the southeast side, exactly opposite of the main road and located near to lifeboat area. Marina (private yachts were located behind the showers & toilet area. On the far east side of the harbour there was a big public beach adjacent to a dock. Fishing boats are located in southeastern side just behind the second car parking near the lifeboat section. There was an unused castle on the far southeastren side near to a small public beach.

Porth harbour has gone through some evident modifications, for example introduction of cafes and shops near the lifeboat area .A new hotel is constructed in place of an abondoned castle located in lower south part along with a private beach. The fishingboats ,private yachta and shower rooms remained the same except an addition of one new toilet and shower area near by marina. There are now two placec for padsenger ferries near the public beach.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You provide a relevant overview, identifying substantial change and the conversion of the disused castle into a hotel, and you compare some facilities between the two plans. However, several details are inaccurate or unclear: the second car park was south of the marina and west of the fishing-boat area, not on the southeast side opposite the main road; the public beach was northeast of the harbour, not adjacent to the dock; and the southern beach was public in 2000 before becoming private. The claim that the fishing boats, marina and shower rooms “remained the same” is misleading because the boats and marina exchanged locations. The statement about two passenger-ferry places is also unsupported. A more precise overview and accurate reporting of the main relocations would strengthen coverage.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, an overview, a paragraph about 2000 and a final paragraph about today. This gives the reader a coherent route through the comparison. Some linking and referencing, however, are unclear or mechanical. For example, “the other one on the southeast side, exactly opposite of the main road” makes the car park’s position difficult to follow, while “The fishingboats, private yachta and shower rooms remained the same” groups features without explaining their different changes. The final paragraph also moves quickly from new facilities to claims about unchanged features and ferries. Organise the details by location or by change, and use clearer references such as “the marina” and “the fishing-boat area” to make relationships easier to track.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for describing a harbour plan, including “transformed,” “renovations,” “introduction,” and “in place of.” These choices help convey change, and the meaning is generally understandable. However, some word choices and collocations are imprecise, such as “car parking areas” for car parks, “behind” to describe a map position, and “evident modifications.” There are also spelling errors in “abondoned,” “southeastren,” “fishingboats,” “yachta,” and “placec,” which reduce accuracy. Aim for consistent, precise map language such as “located to the west of” or “was relocated to,” and check spelling and plural forms carefully. This would make the descriptions more natural and exact.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, and the opening overview uses a clear participial phrase: “including renovations to existing ones…” Some sentences communicate the main idea successfully, but errors in articles, agreement, prepositions and punctuation remain. For example, “Marina … were located” has a subject–verb agreement problem, and “near to lifeboat area” needs clearer article use and phrasing. The sentence beginning “The fishingboats, private yachta…” lacks a clear verb structure, while several clauses run together or have inconsistent spacing after punctuation. Use complete, controlled sentences and check singular/plural agreement, for example, “The marina was located…” Varying sentence structures is useful, but accuracy should take priority when describing several locations in one sentence.
