Student answer (Band 6.0)

I believe that working week should be shorter so people can enjoy longer weekends with their families and friends.

I agree with this because the workers work a whole week for the company owner. Some people work in other cities away from their loved ones to earn money for their family.Every working condition may or may not be cooperative to workers. Through this time, they may go through the harsh treatment of the staff. sometimes, they insult and humilate them in front of their colleagues. They may ask them to work overtime without any extra reward or money. These things can make them depressed and they may suffer from severe mental trauma. They are also away from their family. They cannot share their feelings with family. They try to deal with these difficulties by themselves causing them to have serious medical issues.

However,by making a working week shorter can mitigate these problems. They can join their family early and can spend most of their time with their wife and children. They can go on an outing, have a good meal and enjoy the beautiful moments with their loved ones and friends. This can give them a sense of being appreciated and loved by someone which can help them to heal and recover from their fatigue and mental illness.

To put it in a nutshell, family and friends hold a special place in everyone's life. If someone is given an opportunity to spend some quality time with them, it will boast their confidence and self esteem. They will work with more energy and dedication to give them all the facilities they wanted to have.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

Your position is clear from the opening: you agree that the working week should be shorter, and you give relevant reasons, especially workers’ stress, separation from family, and the chance to recover through more time together. The response also explains a possible benefit to employers, saying workers may return with more energy and dedication. These points address the question and show some development. However, the discussion focuses mainly on difficult working conditions and emotional strain rather than explaining why a shorter week, specifically, is the best response or how it could work. The claim that extra family time will improve confidence and performance is plausible but would benefit from a concrete example or fuller explanation. Developing this link and considering a counterpoint would make the argument more complete.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a recognisable overall structure: an opening position, a paragraph describing workers’ difficulties, a paragraph on the benefits of a shorter week, and a concluding summary. The ideas generally progress from problems to a proposed benefit, so the reader can follow the main argument. However, several points are crowded together in long sequences, particularly the list of harsh treatment, overtime, depression, and medical issues. Some connections are also mechanical or unclear: “Through this time” does not clearly identify a time period, and “However, by making a working week shorter” does not smoothly signal the relationship between the preceding ideas and the solution. Use clearer topic sentences, divide related points, and make references between sentences more precise to improve progression.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a relevant range of vocabulary for the topic, including “overtime,” “severe mental trauma,” “quality time,” “confidence,” and “dedication.” These choices help communicate the effects of work and the value of family time. There are also attempts at more formal phrasing, such as “mitigate these problems,” although some combinations are not natural or precise. For example, “cooperative” is not the right description of working conditions, and “boast their confidence” appears to mean “boost their confidence.” “Heal and recover from their fatigue and mental illness” is also an awkward combination. Spelling errors such as “humilate” and “self esteem” reduce accuracy. Aim for natural collocations and check spelling; more precise vocabulary would make the argument clearer and more convincing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and complex sentences, including cause-and-effect structures such as “They try to deal with these difficulties by themselves causing them to have serious medical issues.” This shows an effort to express relationships between ideas, and the overall meaning is usually understandable. However, some sentence patterns are inaccurate or awkward. For example, “However, by making a working week shorter can mitigate these problems” has an incorrect construction; write “Making the working week shorter could mitigate these problems.” There are also article and agreement issues in “working week,” “the workers work,” and “which can help,” where the reference is unclear. Missing spaces after full stops and commas also affect punctuation. Practise accurate clause construction and review articles, agreement, and sentence boundaries while retaining your attempts at complex forms.
