Student answer (Band 6.5)

People argue that they should have longer weekends and weekdays should be shorter. I agree because it gives them a chance to spend more time with their friends and families and recharge for when they get back to work. Firstly, longer weekends allow families to reconnect and be involved in each other's life. It gives parents the opportunity to know more about how their children are doing either in school or work. They can supervise, help, give advice and be more present. This gives parents a surge of dopamine. Families can also see their friends out more to enjoy their hobbies together. For instance, family friends can plan trips to near-by museums or parks, where they can catch up and enjoy the weather. These gathering make workers in touch with reality. Besides family connections, the health benefits on workers increase since they can unwind for longer and come up with more creative ideas. Longer weekends promote workers to be able to enjoy the time they spend at work, since they know that they have long weekends to look forward to. Longer weekdays can affect people's mental health, since many workers don't like their jobs. For example, the more time they spend at work, the more they resent it and continue to hold a grudge against it. In conclusion, I believe that while working is an important source for experience and money; however, longer weekends are important for families to foster relationships and stay close-knit. Individuals also become more enthusiastic and tolerant of their jobs.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

Your position is clear from the opening: you agree with longer weekends, and the conclusion returns to the benefits for families and workers. The response addresses the question with relevant reasons, including family time, rest, and workers’ attitudes to their jobs. You also extend points with examples, such as parents supporting children and friends visiting museums or parks. However, development is uneven: the claim that family involvement gives parents “a surge of dopamine” is asserted rather than explained, and the point about longer weekdays harming mental health could be linked more directly to the proposed shorter working week. To strengthen the response, explain how shorter weekdays and longer weekends could work in practice and develop each main reason with clearer cause-and-effect support.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a recognisable progression: it introduces your view, develops family benefits, moves to workers’ wellbeing, and ends with a conclusion. “Firstly” and “Besides family connections” help signal the shift between ideas. However, the essay is presented as one continuous paragraph, so the main stages are not visually separated. Some links are also abrupt: “This gives parents a surge of dopamine” follows the discussion of parental involvement without explaining the connection, while “These gathering make workers in touch with reality” is unclear in its relationship to the example. Use separate paragraphs for the introduction, each main reason, and the conclusion, and make references explicit so readers can follow how each example supports your argument.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary to discuss family relationships and work, including “reconnect,” “supervise,” “unwind,” “resent,” and “close-knit.” These choices help communicate your main ideas, and the meaning is generally clear. Some expressions are imprecise or do not collocate naturally, however. “See their friends out more” is awkward, “promote workers to be able to enjoy” is not a natural construction, and “stay in touch with reality” does not clearly express the intended benefit of gatherings. There are also spelling and word-form slips, such as “near-by” and “These gathering.” Aim for more precise phrases such as “spend time with friends,” “enable employees to enjoy,” and “these gatherings help workers maintain social connections.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including clauses with “since,” “where,” and “while,” and most sentences communicate their meaning. Some grammatical and punctuation errors remain. In “These gathering make workers,” the plural subject requires “gatherings”; in “each other's life,” the plural “lives” is needed. The final sentence of the conclusion uses “while” and “however” together, creating an awkward contrast structure: use one, for example, “Although work is an important source of experience and income, longer weekends…” The semicolon before “however” also disrupts the sentence. Review agreement, plural forms, and punctuation in longer sentences to make your varied structures more controlled.
