Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is often argued that there should be less working days and long weekends so that the workers can maintain their work-life balance. I completely agree with this statement because a shorter working week can improve the people's mental and physical health and help increase their productivity.

One of the main reasons why I support this idea is maintaining work-life balance. Many employees who work for the long hours or continuously are less productive due to some limited opportunities. For example, people who spend too much time in office feels anxiety and stress. A long weekend may help them to participate in other activities and fulfill their responsibilities. Consequently, they would feel more satisfied and motivated in their professional lives.

Another major advantage is that it could improve employees productivity. It is often seen that workers who work for shorter periods are performing better. Many companies introduced a longer weekend and their workers are satisfied even with lower salary. For instance, in my area United Bank limited is opened for six days a week generating less income and their employees feel exhausted. In contrast, the Meezan Bank is opened for five days a week generating a huge income. The reason behind that is their workers feel motivated and the bank also offer their workers with 4 holiday trips per month. However, sometimes workers may generate less income if they are paid by hours but it depends on the different policies of companies.

In conclusion, the companies should offer their workers with longer weekends so that they can maintain their work-life balance and feel satisfied increasing their health and productivity.

In conclusion,

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

Your position is clear from the introduction: you completely agree that a shorter working week can support health and productivity, and the conclusion returns to these benefits. Both body paragraphs give relevant reasons, with examples such as the contrast between United Bank and Meezan Bank. This meets the task well, and the specific comparison begins to support your argument beyond general claims. However, some points are not fully explained: the claim that shorter hours improve productivity is asserted before the bank example, but the link between the five-day schedule, the bank’s income and its workers’ motivation remains unclear. The mention of lower hourly earnings is also introduced briefly without being weighed against your overall position. Clarifying these links would make the argument more fully developed.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a coherent overall arrangement: an introduction states your view, two paragraphs present separate reasons, and a conclusion summarises the benefits. Linking expressions such as “For example,” “Consequently,” and “In contrast” help readers follow the main points. Some connections are less clear or feel mechanical, however. In the bank comparison, the relationship between the companies’ schedules, income and employee motivation is difficult to follow, and “However” introduces a qualification that is not developed. The final sentence, “In conclusion,” is left unfinished after a complete concluding paragraph, which disrupts the ending. Remove this fragment and use clearer links to show how each example supports the relevant reason.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the topic, including “work-life balance,” “productive,” “motivated,” “exhausted” and “satisfied.” These choices make your main ideas understandable, and you attempt some more specific language when discussing employee wellbeing and company performance. There are, however, several inaccurate or unnatural word combinations, such as “less working days,” “limited opportunities,” “generating a huge income” and “offer their workers with 4 holiday trips.” These do not usually prevent understanding, but they reduce precision and naturalness. Aim to learn common collocations as complete phrases, and choose wording that states the intended relationship precisely—for example, whether a company earns more revenue or employees receive more time off.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including a reason clause (“because a shorter working week can improve…”) and a conditional qualification (“workers may generate less income if they are paid by hours”). Most ideas remain understandable, but some grammatical errors recur. For example, “people… feels” has subject–verb disagreement, “employees productivity” needs a possessive form, and “the bank also offer” should agree with its singular subject. There are also problems with articles and sentence construction in “United Bank limited is opened for six days a week.” These errors do not generally block communication, but they make several sentences less controlled. Check agreement and possessives during editing, and revise sentences with multiple claims so their grammatical relationships are clear.
