Student answer (Band 7.0)

It often argued that employees should work fewer days each week and enjoy a longer weekend. I strongly agree with this view because it can improve workers' physical health and mental well-being with increasing productivity at work.

To begin with, a shorter working week allow employees to maintain their healthier work-life balance. Many people work long hours and have little time to relax, spend time with their families, or pursue hobbies. As a result, they often experience stress and burnout, which can negatively affect both their health and job performance. An extra day off would give workers more opportunities to rest, exersise, recover from the pressures of work feeling refreshed and motivated.

Furthermore, reducing the number of working days does not necessarily decrease productivity. In fact many companies have introduced a four-day working week have repoted higher effeciency and improved emplyee satisfaction. When workers know they have less time to compelete their tasks, they often manage their time more effectively and avoid unnecessary distractions. This benefits emplyers through higher-quality work and fewer sick leaves. For example, several organisation that experienced with a four-day workweek found that employee performance remainded stable or even improved the performance.

However, some industries, such as health care, transportation, and emergency services, require employee to work throughout the week. In these cases, implementing a shorter working weeks may be addressed by introducing shift system or hiring additional staff so that essential services countinue without interruption.

In conclusion, i firmly believe that shorter working week and longer weekend would benefit both employees and employers by improving well-being, reducing stress, and enhancing productivity. Therefore, government and businesses should consider adopting this approach whenever possible.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

The response clearly addresses the prompt and maintains a consistent position throughout. The arguments regarding health benefits and productivity are relevant and well-supported with logical reasoning. The inclusion of a counter-argument regarding essential services adds depth to the discussion, demonstrating a balanced approach. While the ideas are well-developed, some points could benefit from more specific, concrete examples beyond general statements about 'several organisations'. Overall, the response fully addresses all parts of the task and presents a clear, well-supported argument.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central topic, and the progression of ideas is easy to follow. Cohesive devices such as 'To begin with', 'Furthermore', and 'In conclusion' are used effectively to link ideas. However, there are minor instances where the flow could be smoother, and some referencing is slightly mechanical. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct points, contributing to the overall coherence of the piece.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary used is generally appropriate and sufficient for the task. You demonstrate an ability to use topic-specific language such as 'well-being', 'burnout', and 'efficiency'. However, there are several spelling errors (e.g., 'exersise', 'repoted', 'effeciency', 'emplyee', 'compelete', 'emplyers', 'organisation', 'remainded') that detract from the overall quality. While these errors do not impede communication, they prevent the essay from reaching a higher band. Focusing on proofreading for common spelling mistakes will significantly improve your score in this criterion.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. You show control over complex sentences, such as 'When workers know they have less time to complete their tasks, they often manage their time more effectively'. However, there are recurring grammatical errors, such as missing articles ('a shorter working week allow' should be 'allows'), subject-verb agreement issues, and minor punctuation slips. While these errors are frequent, they rarely impede the reader's understanding of your arguments. Increasing the variety of complex structures and ensuring subject-verb agreement would help elevate your score.
