Student answer (Band 6.0)

Over the past few decades, it has been argued that environmental issues are increasing with time. Some people believe that environmental problems are mainly due to politicians, not individuals. I disagree with this view because everyone has different opinions. This essay will suggest the main reasons and the solutions to this problem before giving my opinion.

In recent years, some people believe that environmental problems are increasing with time because of politicians. First of all, leaders are not giving attention to cleanliness, which makes our surroundings dirty and unclean. It creates several harmful impacts on the human body, such as fewer energy and many more others. Moreover, it also affects the country’s economy because of dirty places. For instance, people who are fond of visiting new places do not prefer travelling in dirty countries. As a result, they do not prefer travelling. Unlike people who live in developed countries, they always want to explore new cultures and places, which help them improve their knowledge and broaden their perspective. Consequently, they do not choose such countries that are dirty and polluted.

There are several solutions to this issue. Firstly, governments should provide more valuable knowledge about the importance of cleanliness and a good environment. As a result, people may become more responsible about their surroundings and streets. Secondly, the government should provide dustbins in every street, which helps us to collect all the waste in the dustbins. This will improve the quality of life.

In my opinion, leaders should pay attention to cleanliness. Similarly, ordinary people should become more responsible for their society, which helps us develop a new perspective. It provides advantages for both local people and tourists.

In conclusion, the government should spend more public money on cleanliness. For example, by making new roads, improving transport and developing public facilities, the quality of life can be improved. I strongly believe that this solution may solve this problem. However, only the government cannot solve this issue without us. Therefore, we should encourage everyone to care about cleanliness. That is why I disagree with this statement.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response is completely off-topic. The prompt asks for an opinion on whether the working week should be shorter and the weekend longer. However, the essay discusses environmental issues and the role of politicians in cleanliness. Because the student failed to address the actual prompt, the task achievement is severely impacted. While the essay follows a standard structure (introduction, body paragraphs, conclusion), the content is entirely irrelevant to the task instructions provided. To improve, it is essential to carefully read the prompt and ensure the arguments directly relate to the specific question asked.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized into paragraphs, and there is a clear attempt to use cohesive devices such as 'First of all', 'Moreover', 'Consequently', and 'In conclusion'. These markers help the reader follow the flow of the text, even though the content itself is unrelated to the prompt. The progression of ideas within the paragraphs is generally clear, and the essay follows a standard academic structure. However, the lack of relevance to the topic makes the overall coherence feel disjointed in the context of the exam task.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for basic communication but lacks the range and precision expected for higher bands. There is some repetition of simple terms like 'cleanliness', 'dirty', and 'government'. While the student attempts to use some academic vocabulary (e.g., 'broaden their perspective', 'developed countries'), the overall range is limited. There are no significant spelling errors that impede communication, but the lexical choices are generally quite basic and do not demonstrate a flexible or sophisticated command of the language.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical errors, such as 'fewer energy' (should be 'less energy') and 'only the government cannot solve this issue' (which is slightly awkward phrasing). However, these errors do not generally prevent the reader from understanding the intended meaning. The punctuation is mostly correct, and the sentence construction is functional. To reach a higher band, the student should aim for more varied complex structures and ensure greater accuracy in subject-verb agreement and word choice.
