Student answer (Band 7.5)

It is often argued that the work hours per week for workers should be reduced along with the provision of longer weekend for them. I completely agree with this because it increases the productivity of workers thereby benefitting the companies economically in the long-run. This essay will discuss the possible merits of this trend to reason my agreement with the statement.

The primary benefit of shortening working week is that it provides workers with ample time to keep them physically and mentally balanced. As evident from some recent studies, workers are having decline in productivity, despite them working longer hours. On the other hand, another survey found that among the companies offering flexible work-life balance by replacing '9 to 5' trend with '10 to 2', employees were found to be more relaxed and performed better in their workplace. Because of shorter week workers feel less pressure and gain enough hours for sleep and relaxation, thereby performing better in their work.

Furthermore, even the companies benefit due to this trend. Although there are some proponents who believe that cutting hours mean less work being done. In reality, it is not true, as the output a relaxed worker provides in 5 hours is far more superior than what a worker with longer work hours. This helps companies in the long run as increase in productivity of their employees often helps them grow faster and show significant boost in their revenue. For instance, Amazon reported that its revenue doubled after making shift from longer to shorter working week for employees.

To conclude, I believe in making work week shorter and increasing weekends for workers because of its significant benefits towards them as well their companies. While there maybe some opposing this view, the long term merits such as good health of employee and increased revenue of companies outweighs any demerits and should be brought into practice.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, clearly stating a position in the introduction and maintaining it throughout. The ideas regarding employee well-being and company productivity are relevant and well-supported. While the example of Amazon is specific, it is a generalisation that could be more nuanced; however, the argument is sufficiently developed to meet the requirements for a Band 7. The conclusion effectively summarises the main points and reinforces the writer's stance.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The essay is logically organised with a clear progression of ideas. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate the two main arguments. Cohesive devices such as 'Furthermore', 'On the other hand', and 'To conclude' are used appropriately to guide the reader. There is some minor awkwardness in referencing, such as 'this trend' being used repeatedly, but the overall flow is smooth and the relationship between ideas is clear throughout the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

The vocabulary is adequate for the task and allows for the expression of ideas with reasonable precision. There are some good collocations like 'physically and mentally balanced' and 'work-life balance'. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'far more superior' (superior is already a comparative) and 'making shift' (should be 'making a shift'). The range is sufficient to convey the intended meaning clearly, though it lacks the sophistication required for a higher band.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical slips, such as 'thereby benefitting' (should be 'benefiting'), 'workers are having decline' (missing article), and 'there maybe some opposing' (should be 'there may be'). Despite these errors, the meaning is never obscured, and the punctuation is generally accurate. The control over complex structures is present but not entirely consistent, which is typical of a Band 6.5 performance.
