Student answer (Band 6.5)

Nowadays, the debate is going on that the working week should be shorter and workers should have a longer weekend. I strongly agree with the proposal because a shorter working week will lead to do the work fast and people will be motivated.

The primary reason for supporting this the people will be motivated to work for short period as they know that if we will finish the work fast then we will get the long weekend and it will keep them motivated to complete the work fast and enjoy the weekend. Long hours may be stress, fatigue and people do not want to do overtime if the working week is short the the people will complete the work fast. By having an extra days off the employee can spend more time with their family and after that he will be more motivated to do the work.

Furthermore, longer weekend will help them to enhance the energy. Many of the companies have done experiment on employee that the 4 working days is a good for the employee they manage their time and complete the task on proper time with best management. Because of these the business may increased there productivity. It can also save the transportation, electricity and etc. of the company. It will benefit the company to retention of the staff.

Additionally, some profession can not work 4 days a week like hospitals, public transport they need to work more than 4 days as these services are emergency services the people will need these services at ant time. This can be done by rotating shifts and it will give them healthier life balance.

In conclusion, I firmly believe that the short working week will help the people to maintain their health and work life balance there should be short working week and long weekend.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses the prompt by clearly stating a position in favor of a shorter working week. The ideas are relevant, such as increased motivation, productivity, and work-life balance. However, the development is somewhat repetitive, particularly regarding the idea of 'finishing work fast.' While the inclusion of emergency services as a counter-point is a good attempt at nuance, the explanation of how this fits into the argument could be more clearly linked to the main thesis. Overall, the response covers all parts of the task, but the arguments would benefit from more specific examples or deeper analysis to reach a higher band.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, each with a clear focus. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'Furthermore,' 'Additionally,' and 'In conclusion,' which help guide the reader. However, some transitions are mechanical, and the flow within paragraphs is occasionally hindered by repetitive phrasing. For instance, the second paragraph repeats the idea of 'completing work fast' multiple times, which disrupts the logical progression. Referencing is generally clear, but the use of pronouns and linking words could be more varied to improve the overall flow and coherence of the argument.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks the range and precision required for higher bands. There is frequent repetition of basic words like 'work,' 'fast,' and 'motivated.' Some collocations are slightly unnatural, such as 'do the work fast' instead of 'complete tasks efficiently' or 'manage their time' instead of 'optimize their time.' While the meaning is always clear, the lack of sophisticated or topic-specific vocabulary (e.g., 'burnout,' 'operational efficiency,' 'workforce retention') limits the score. Improving the variety of word choices would significantly enhance the quality of the writing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are frequent grammatical errors, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('the business may increased there productivity'), missing articles, and awkward phrasing ('Long hours may be stress'). Punctuation is generally functional, but there are some run-on sentences and minor errors in sentence construction that occasionally require the reader to re-read for clarity. While the errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent the essay from reaching the 7.0 level, which requires more frequent error-free sentences.
