Student answer (Band 6.5)

I partially agree with the statement, the working week should be shorter and workers should have a long weekend.

According to my perspective, from years the working culture is been following the working schedule in which ones have to work from Monday to Saturday and only on Sundays they get a weekend holiday. But, this days people are more engaged towards balancing there life by working on weekdays and relaxing on weekends by at least getting a two days leave by which they could spend this time with there families, friends and many more which could help them relax from a busy weekday work schedule.

Another significant effect of implementing this method is that everyone wants to get paid weekend holidays which is not possible to do in every country as we know some of the European countries follow this method and the rules are been implemented by governments which says the employees should get 3 months of paid leave every year. At last this becomes very difficult for the companies to earn profits as to cover that 3 months of work the companies need to hire more employees then the actual need. Which at last becomes very difficult for small scale companies to earn profits.

Moreover, I feel employees should at least get two days of weekend which could be an option as if one wants to do extra work to earn more he or she could also work on Saturday which is beneficial for both employees and companies.

In conclusion, I believe that both have its own positives and negatives. Hence, the working week should be decided comparing multiple factors of a country.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

You have addressed the prompt by providing a balanced view, acknowledging both the benefits of a shorter work week and the potential economic challenges for businesses. Your position is clear from the introduction. However, the development of your ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the claim about European countries mandating '3 months of paid leave' is factually questionable and lacks specific detail, which weakens your argument. To improve, ensure your supporting points are grounded in realistic examples and expand on the 'why' behind your claims to provide a more thorough exploration of the topic.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is organised into logical paragraphs, each with a clear focus. You use some cohesive devices such as 'According to my perspective', 'Another significant effect', and 'Moreover' to signal transitions between ideas. However, the flow is occasionally hindered by awkward phrasing and some mechanical use of linking words. The referencing is sometimes unclear, such as in the final paragraph where 'both' refers back to the two sides of the argument, but the connection could be smoother. Improving the variety of your cohesive devices and ensuring they are used more naturally will help elevate your score.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, allowing you to express your ideas clearly. You use some topic-specific terms like 'small scale companies', 'working schedule', and 'implementing'. However, there are instances of imprecise word choice and minor errors, such as 'engaged towards balancing there life' (should be 'engaged in balancing their lives') and 'from years' (should be 'for years'). The vocabulary is generally functional but lacks the sophistication or precision required for higher band scores. Focusing on accurate collocations and avoiding repetitive phrasing will strengthen this area.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this level. However, there are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text, particularly with subject-verb agreement and article usage, such as 'the rules are been implemented' (should be 'have been implemented') and 'there life' (should be 'their lives'). While these errors do not impede overall communication, they are persistent enough to prevent a higher score. To improve, pay closer attention to verb tenses and pronoun usage, and try to incorporate more complex sentence structures with greater accuracy.
