Student answer (Band 6.5)

Globally, one of the emerging topics to debate is about the length of work week. Many people believe that the working week should be shorter and employees should have a longer weekend. I completely agree with this idea as I believe a shorter work week can result in a better quality of life and can increase workers' overall productivity.

A long workweek makes life challenging by leaving less time for relaxation. Most people have to manage household chores and other related responsibilities after a busy work day. This makes it difficult for them to find enough time to relax and take part in any recreational activity. Having a shorter workweek can help in many ways by providing more time me to manage daily responsibilities while also getting ample time for relaxation and recreation. This helps in reducing the pressure caused by hectic routine and improves workers' overall well-being. For instance, an employee working four days a week will have a better work-life balance and will be less stressed compared with an employee with a six-day work week.

In addition, working fewer days a week result may increase the employees ' focus on their work as workers try to be more organized to finish their tasks in a relatively shorter time. This may increase overall productivity and help in achieving job targets in time. For example, a person who gets four day a to work on a task will be more focused to achieve the task on time as compared to a person having six days to complete the same task.

Hence, a shorter week improves people's' quality of life while simultaneouly increasing overall performance at work. I believe relevant authorities should also consider this option as a potential strategy for larger good.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response clearly addresses the prompt and maintains a consistent position throughout. The arguments regarding quality of life and productivity are relevant and logically extended. The ideas are supported with examples, such as the comparison between four-day and six-day work weeks. While the development is sufficient, the essay could be improved by exploring potential counter-arguments or providing more nuanced analysis to reach a higher band. Overall, the response is well-focused and directly answers the question, meeting the requirements for a clear, developed argument.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas. Cohesive devices such as 'In addition', 'For instance', and 'Hence' are used to guide the reader through the argument. However, there are minor issues with flow and some mechanical phrasing, such as 'time me to manage' and 'people's' quality of life'. Despite these small slips, the progression of ideas is clear and easy to follow throughout the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate and appropriate for the task. The student uses topic-specific terms like 'recreational activity', 'work-life balance', and 'productivity' effectively. There are some minor errors in word choice and phrasing, such as 'larger good' instead of 'greater good' and 'four day a to work' which is a grammatical/lexical slip. The range is sufficient to convey ideas clearly, but it lacks the more sophisticated, precise collocations or idiomatic expressions that would characterize a higher band score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The student demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While many sentences are clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as 'working fewer days a week result may increase' (subject-verb agreement) and 'people's' (incorrect apostrophe usage). Additionally, there are minor typos like 'simultaneouly' and 'time me to manage'. These errors do not impede communication, but they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. To improve, the student should focus on proofreading for subject-verb agreement and punctuation consistency.
