Student answer (Band 6.0)

Some people argue that working week should be reduced as workers should have more weekends to themselves.

To begin, i strongly agree that workers should have more time to rest as the number of work days does not give so much time for workers to unwind themselves after a stressful workload was placed on them. Presently due of lack of good sleep more persons are falling into depression and having high blood pressure that has led to in increasing rate of lost of lives among working class people, this is as a result of not having a shorter work weeks. For instance, in Nigeria, bankers would work from Monday to Saturday having just Sunday to rest which does not give a complete stress recovery therefore leading to mental and emotional stress in people.

Furthermore, another essential reason why working weeks should be made shorter is to all parents and couples to bond stronger among themselves, as this can promote unity than constant conflict among couples. Due to the fact that these people spend most of their time at work places it distort how they should have learnt to live with each other, so i feel if the number of working week is reduces the number of divorce cases will also be minimal among families.

In summary, having more work days that rest days lead to untimely death among and does not allow bonding among new or existing couples, include children who would want to enjoy the presence of their parents.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses the prompt by taking a clear position in favor of a shorter working week. The ideas are relevant, focusing on health benefits and family cohesion. However, the development is somewhat limited. While the example of bankers in Nigeria is a good attempt at support, the argument regarding divorce rates is a generalization that lacks depth. The conclusion is also quite abrupt and fails to fully summarize the main points or restate the position effectively. To reach a higher band, you should aim to expand on your points with more detailed explanations and ensure the conclusion provides a more comprehensive wrap-up of your arguments.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organized into clear paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the progression of ideas. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'To begin', 'Furthermore', and 'In summary', to signal transitions. However, the use of these devices is sometimes mechanical, and the flow between sentences within paragraphs can be slightly disjointed. For example, the transition between the health impact and the Nigerian example could be smoother. Additionally, there are some issues with referencing, such as the vague use of 'these people' in the second paragraph, which makes the connection to the previous sentence slightly unclear. Improving the variety and precision of your linking words will enhance the overall flow.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'stressful workload', 'unwind', and 'emotional stress'. However, there are several instances of awkward word choice and collocation errors, such as 'lost of lives' (loss of life), 'all parents' (allow parents), and 'distort how they should have learnt' (hinder how they learn). These errors do not prevent communication, but they do limit the precision of your writing. To improve, focus on learning common collocations and ensuring that your word choices are contextually appropriate. Expanding your vocabulary to include more academic or topic-specific synonyms would also be beneficial.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text. Issues include subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'working week should be reduced'), incorrect preposition usage ('due of lack'), and awkward phrasing ('the number of working week is reduces'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with comma usage. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they are frequent enough to affect the clarity of your arguments. You should focus on proofreading for basic grammatical accuracy, specifically checking for verb tense consistency and pluralization, and practice constructing more complex sentences with greater precision.
