Student answer (Band 7.5)

It is often suggested that the working week should be shorter so that people can have a longer weekend. I agree with this idea because it can help workers have a better balance between their jobs and personal lives, and it may also improve their performance at work.

Firstly, a shorter working week can give people more time to rest and spend with their families. Many workers have busy schedules and feel tired after working for five days. They may not have enough time to do exercise, meet friends or take care of household activities. If they had an extra day off, they could use this time to relax and recover from work. For example, parents could spend more time with their children or take part in activities together. This could reduce stress and improve their quality of life.

Secondly, having a longer weekend could make workers more productive. When employees are tired, they may find it difficult to concentrate and complete their tasks effectively. On the other hand, people who have enough time to rest are likely to feel more energetic when they return to work. For instance, a company could introduce a four-day working week while keeping the same salary. Although employees would work fewer days, they might be more focused and finish their work more efficiently.

In conclusion, I believe that the working week should be reduced and the weekend should be longer. This change would give workers more time for their personal lives and could also help them become healthier, happier and more productive.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The response fully addresses the prompt by taking a clear position in favor of a shorter working week. The ideas are well-developed, with two distinct body paragraphs focusing on work-life balance and productivity. Each point is supported by logical reasoning and relevant examples, such as the mention of parents spending time with children and the concept of a four-day work week. The position is consistent throughout the essay, and the conclusion effectively summarizes the main arguments. The response meets all requirements of the task.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central topic sentence, and ideas flow smoothly from one to the next. Cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Secondly', 'On the other hand', and 'In conclusion' are used effectively to guide the reader. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct arguments. The progression of ideas is logical and easy to follow, demonstrating a good command of organizational structure.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary used is sufficient and appropriate for the task. The student employs a range of topic-specific terms such as 'work-life balance', 'productive', 'concentrate', and 'efficiently'. While the vocabulary is accurate and clear, it is somewhat functional and lacks a wider range of less common or more sophisticated lexical items that would elevate the score to the highest band. However, there are no errors in word choice or collocation that impede communication, and the language is natural throughout.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5

The essay demonstrates a good control of grammatical structures. There is a mix of simple and complex sentences, such as the use of conditional structures ('If they had an extra day off, they could use...') and concessive clauses ('Although employees would work fewer days...'). The grammar is generally accurate, with very few errors. Punctuation is used correctly, and the sentence construction is clear. The majority of sentences are error-free, reflecting a solid grasp of English grammar.
