Student answer (Band 5.5)
In the modern era, majority of individuals work six days per week from 9: 00.am to 5: 00.pm. Some people argue that people can manage longer period of work during working week. However, others believe that longer working week leads to stress and anxiety and weaken relationship bonds. I personally believe that companies should offer longer weekends to their employees to maintain work life balance, and radiant health. I will discuss my reasons about this in the upcoming paragraphs.
To commence with the reasons that is accord with the aforementioned view that employees should have longer weekends because more working days per week impact social life of people. To explain it, due to their busy schedule, they do not have spare time for their family and children which weaken their relationship bond. Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response fails to meet the minimum word count requirement of 250 words, which significantly impacts the development of ideas. While you clearly state your position in the introduction, the essay is incomplete, ending abruptly in the conclusion. The arguments regarding social life and health are relevant but remain under-developed due to the lack of a full conclusion and sufficient supporting detail. To improve, you must ensure that each body paragraph provides a fully realized argument with a clear link to the prompt, and you must complete the essay structure to ensure all parts of the task are addressed.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The essay uses basic cohesive devices such as 'To commence with' and 'Apart from this' to signal transitions between ideas. However, the progression is hindered by the incomplete nature of the text. Paragraphing is attempted, but the final paragraph is unfinished, which disrupts the logical flow of the argument. Referencing is generally clear, but the lack of a concluding summary makes the overall structure feel disjointed. To achieve a higher score, ensure that each paragraph has a clear topic sentence and that the essay concludes with a cohesive summary of your main points.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks the range and precision required for higher bands. You use some relevant terms like 'work life balance' and 'radiant health', but there are instances of awkward phrasing and word choice errors, such as 'radiant health' (which is slightly unnatural in this context) and 'week social relationships' (where 'weak' was intended). There is also some repetition of basic vocabulary. To improve, focus on using more precise collocations and academic vocabulary, and ensure you proofread for simple spelling errors that can distract the reader.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The essay relies primarily on simple sentence structures. While there are some attempts at complex sentences, they often contain grammatical errors, such as 'majority of individuals' (missing the article 'the') and 'longer working week cause' (subject-verb agreement error). Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with the spacing around colons and periods in '9: 00.am'. To improve, focus on mastering subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles. Incorporating a wider variety of complex sentence structures, such as conditional clauses or relative clauses, will help demonstrate better grammatical control.
