Student answer (Band 6.0)

In recent years, there has been an upward trend towards increased working hours of the workplaces. I firmly agree with the view to great extent that working week should be shortened, although there are some exceptions. This essay will support my opinion with possible logical reasons.

To begin with, there are few drawbacks which could be the consequences of having extended weekend. For instance, the overall economy of country is dependent on numerous types of businesses, reducing the working hours could negatively impcat the economy which leads to unexpected inflation across the country. Furthermore, reduced working hours would affect profit rate of the current businesses which largely contributes to overall economy.

In contrast, shortened working week could impact positively to the individuals in numerous ways. It could provide sufficient amount of extra time that could be spent with family or the loved ones to strengthen the bonds. Moreover, people personal choices and interests also should be considered. Extended weekend could encourage the individuals to follow their personal passions which they had lost due to excessive working hours at the workplace. In addition, the overall creativity of people could be enhanced by longer vactions. There has been research done that there is direct connection between boredom and creativity which can be acquired by making youself bored intentionally.

In conclusion, although this trend is disadvantageous to economy and businesses, there are more benefits of this trend which are considereble factors such as extra time for strengthen the bonds, follow peronal passion and improved creativity also should be considered. I firmly agree with the statment that working week should be shorter.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses the prompt and maintains a clear position throughout. You have identified both sides of the argument, acknowledging potential economic drawbacks before presenting the benefits of a shorter working week. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the point about 'boredom and creativity' is an interesting concept but lacks a clear connection to the main argument regarding the working week. To reach a higher band, ensure that every supporting point directly reinforces your central thesis. While the position is clear, the explanation of the economic impact is a bit generic and could benefit from more specific examples or deeper analysis of how a shorter week might actually increase productivity.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. You use cohesive devices such as 'To begin with', 'In contrast', and 'In conclusion' to guide the reader through your argument. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and there are instances where the flow could be smoother. For example, the transition between the economic argument and the personal benefits could be more sophisticated. Additionally, there are minor issues with referencing and sentence-level cohesion, such as the phrase 'which are considereble factors such as extra time for strengthen the bonds', which is grammatically clunky and disrupts the flow of the final paragraph.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'upward trend', 'consequences', and 'inflation'. However, there are several instances of imprecise word choice and minor errors. For example, you wrote 'profit rate of the current businesses' instead of 'profitability' or 'profit margins', and 'longer vactions' (spelling error). The phrase 'strengthen the bonds' is slightly unnatural in this context; 'strengthen family ties' would be more precise. While you attempt to use some less common vocabulary, the inaccuracies in collocation and spelling prevent the response from reaching a higher band. Focus on learning common collocations to improve your precision.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally distract the reader. Examples include 'upward trend towards increased working hours of the workplaces' (awkward preposition use), 'impact positively to the individuals' (incorrect preposition), and 'people personal choices' (missing possessive 's'). There are also issues with article usage and subject-verb agreement, such as 'overall economy of country' and 'there is direct connection'. To improve, focus on proofreading for basic grammatical accuracy and ensuring that your complex sentences are constructed without errors in agreement or word order.
