Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is being argued that working days of week should be reduced and employees should have a longer weekend. I firmly believe that there should be a longer weekend as it will offer more time to the workers to relax and will also be proved to be a sustainable approach.

With the advancements in technology, the job environments are becoming drastically competitive. So, employees must work hard to cope with their weekly tasks and ultimately get exhausted. The expended weekend will give more time to the workers to destress themselves from their hectic workload. This change will not only offers benefits to the worker but it will also be advantageous to the institutions. As, relaxed minds will work more productively and the progress of the hiring companies will be improved. For example, a study in USA has indicated that employees having two day offs per week work 20% more efficiently than the worker getting only one day off.

The extended weekends will also be proved environment friendly because a longer weekend will reduce the use of resources like transport and electricity at the offices. Thus, saving these resources will contribute towards a more sustainable future. It is evidenced by a research in Nigeria that suggests about 30% of the total transport and electricity of the country was consumed by the corporate employees.

In conclusion, I would like to put forward that the weekends should be longer because an expanded weekend will provide more time to workers to relax and will also be helpful in reducing the energy use in offices.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

You have clearly stated your position in the introduction and maintained it throughout the essay. The ideas are relevant, particularly the focus on productivity and environmental sustainability. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, while you mention that relaxed minds work more productively, you could have expanded on the psychological benefits of work-life balance to provide a more comprehensive argument. The examples provided, such as the study in the USA and the research in Nigeria, are relevant but feel slightly generic. To reach a higher band, ensure that your supporting points are fully explored with more depth and nuance.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. You use cohesive devices such as 'With the advancements in technology', 'Thus', and 'In conclusion' to guide the reader. However, some transitions feel a bit mechanical, and the use of 'As' at the beginning of a sentence ('As, relaxed minds...') is grammatically incorrect and disrupts the flow. Paragraphing is used appropriately, and there is a clear progression of ideas from the personal benefits of a longer weekend to the broader environmental impact. Improving the variety of linking words would enhance the overall cohesion.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your ideas clearly. Phrases like 'drastically competitive', 'hectic workload', and 'sustainable future' are used effectively. There are some minor inaccuracies, such as 'will also be proved to be' (should be 'will prove to be') and 'the progress of the hiring companies will be improved' (which is slightly awkward phrasing). While you attempt to use less common vocabulary, the precision could be improved to reach a higher band. Overall, the vocabulary is adequate for the task and does not impede communication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While many sentences are clear, there are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text. For example, 'It is being argued that working days of week should be reduced' (should be 'the working days of the week'), 'This change will not only offers benefits' (should be 'will not only offer'), and 'a study in USA' (should be 'a study in the USA'). These errors are frequent but do not prevent the reader from understanding your message. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles.
