Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is believed that workers should be provided with a longer weekend by reducing workdays. I partially agree with this statement as it could increase productivity in a workplace but directly having less working week and same weekend days for everyone have some drawbacks.

Providing a longer weekend can help with productivity in workers by giving them more days to relax. For example, a research has showed that workers who rest more have more passion and desire to do their job compared to the ones work continuously with no rest. Further example would be a company which offered their workers four days of working and three days of weekend, this made a huge progress in workers doing their job like they were more focused and finished each project very quickly compared to before. Therefore, this would be beneficial for workers by also giving a chance to spend their off days with their family members and partners.

On the other hand, this has a significant drawbacks for the company. if company give all their workers less working week, this could lead to less profit or even bankruptcy. As the company have to shut down for more days and the waited jobs would have to be made slower. However, there is alternative solutions for this issue, one would be to give all workers a four working-days, but make it on different days. For instance, one worker could have their day off on Thursday, while the others could be on Friday. By implementing this policy in a company, it can be beneficial for both company and workers.

In conclusion, although it is detrimental to the company if they have give same holidays for every worker. By using the strategy that allows them to have their off days on random day, has more benefits for both of them.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, providing a clear position that is partially in agreement. The ideas are relevant, such as the impact on productivity and the logistical challenges for businesses. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat limited. While you mention that a shorter week could lead to bankruptcy, this point is not fully explored with specific economic reasoning. The example of the four-day work week is a good start, but it lacks depth. To reach a higher band, ensure that each supporting point is fully explained with more detailed analysis or concrete evidence to strengthen your argument.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each with a distinct focus. You use cohesive devices such as 'On the other hand', 'For instance', and 'In conclusion' to guide the reader. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and there are minor issues with referencing and flow. For example, the phrase 'this has a significant drawbacks' contains a grammatical error that disrupts the cohesion. Additionally, the connection between the conclusion and the body paragraphs could be smoother. Overall, the progression of ideas is clear, but the use of cohesive devices could be more varied and natural to improve the flow.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'detrimental', 'implementing', and 'productivity'. However, there are several instances of awkward word choice and collocation errors, such as 'directly having less working week' and 'the waited jobs would have to be made slower'. These errors do not impede communication, but they do limit the precision of your writing. To improve, focus on learning common collocations and ensuring that your word forms (e.g., 'a research' should be 'research') are accurate. Expanding your vocabulary to include more sophisticated synonyms will help elevate your score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While you attempt complex sentences, there are frequent errors in grammar and punctuation, such as subject-verb agreement ('As the company have to shut down') and article usage ('a research has showed'). Some sentences are slightly clunky, which affects the overall fluency. To reach a higher band, you need to increase the frequency of error-free sentences and ensure that your complex structures are used with greater accuracy. Proofreading for basic grammatical slips, particularly with pluralization and verb tenses, would significantly improve your performance.
