Student answer (Band 7.5)

It is often argued that employees should work fewer days a week and have longer weekends. I completely agree with this view because it would increase employee satisfaction and, subsequently, productivity, while giving them more time for personal and social activities.

One of the major advantages of longer weekends is a surge in employee productivity as a result of greater workplace satisfaction. When employees get more time off to relax, their fatigue and burnout are significantly reduced, allowing them to concentrate better and helping organisations achieve their goals more efficiently. Although many traditional organisations require workers to work throughout the whole week, some office-based jobs can be performed effectively within fewer working days. For example, an employee who works four well-structured days may be more productive than someone who works five days while experiencing fatigue and burnout.

Another positive aspect of a shorter working week is that it gives employees more time to interact socially and reconnect with their loved ones. Consequently, they may feel more connected to their families and contribute more to society. Moreover, they can use their additional free time to pursue their interests or undertake side jobs to earn extra money. For instance, many young professionals nowadays engage in freelancing during their free time to supplement their income, which can contribute to greater financial independence. They can then invest this additional income in their future or use it to pursue their personal interests.

In conclusion, I believe the working week should be shortened as this would significantly reduce fatigue and burnout among workers, thereby increasing job satisfaction and productivity while also allowing employees to achieve a healthier work-life balance.
