Do you agree or disagree?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 7.0)

Working week should be minimal and employees should have longer weekends. I firmly agree with this view because it will strengthen relationships with family and friends and encourage leisure activities.

First and foremost, longer weekends may improve the relationship employees have with their families. This is because many workers devote their time to work. Many of them may miss out on special moments with families and friends due to the longer days they have to attend to work. For instance, during Christmas holidays some employees are likely to be at work due to heavy workload. Moreover, if working days are made shorter and weekends more longer, many personnel would spend quality time with their family and friends. As a result, they share memories, while strengthening bonds. However, sometimes, longer holidays could make personnel forget their job roles due to the distractions from loved ones. This can be avoided by encouraging employees to enroll in online courses that would help them gain more skills while they are still on holidays.

Furthermore, many workers could use their extended weekends to participate in various leisure activities such as games, exercise or rest which may be beneficial to their overall well-being. They may even use this opportunity to visit hospitals for checkups and appointments. For example, In cities like Lagos, Nigeria, some employees with minor health issue may have the opportunity to seek for treatments and medical advice. This will help them to have a work-life balance. Consequently, enhancing their productivity at the workplace.

In conclusion, I firmly concur that weekends should be longer and weekdays made shorter because workers could engage in leisure activities and strengthen their bonds their families.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have clearly stated your position in the introduction and maintained it throughout the essay. The ideas regarding family relationships and personal well-being are relevant and logically developed. However, the essay could be improved by providing more depth in the analysis. For instance, the counter-argument about employees forgetting their roles is a good addition, but the suggestion to use online courses feels slightly disconnected from the main argument of the working week. To reach a higher band, ensure that every supporting point directly reinforces your central thesis about the benefits of a shorter working week.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. You use cohesive devices such as 'First and foremost', 'Moreover', and 'Consequently' to guide the reader through your arguments. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas. To improve, ensure that the transition between sentences is smoother; some sentences feel slightly disjointed. Additionally, ensure that referencing is precise, as seen in the phrase 'strengthen their bonds their families', which is missing a preposition, slightly affecting the flow of the final sentence.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your ideas clearly. Phrases like 'devote their time', 'quality time', and 'work-life balance' are used effectively. There are some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'weekends more longer' (should be 'longer weekends') and 'seek for treatments' (the verb 'seek' does not require 'for'). While you attempt to use some less common vocabulary, the overall range is adequate rather than wide. Focusing on more precise collocations and avoiding repetitive phrasing will help elevate your score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While many sentences are clear, there are recurring grammatical slips, such as 'weekends more longer' and the missing preposition in 'bonds their families'. Punctuation is generally accurate, though some sentence structures are slightly repetitive. To achieve a higher band, try to incorporate a wider variety of complex grammatical structures, such as conditional sentences or passive voice, while ensuring that your control over basic grammar remains consistent. The current level of accuracy is sufficient for communication but contains enough errors to prevent a higher score.
