Student answer (Band 6.0)

Some people believe that a shorter working week is more beneficial, while others oppose this view. I completely disagree with the idea of a shorter weekend. I have several reasons for this opinion, which I will discuss in the following paragraphs.

One of the main reasons for supporting a longer weekend is that the world today is quite fast-paced, and people have very little time for their family and friends. This can cause problems in their personal relationships. If I look around myself, I know many family members who have problems with their wives because they cannot give them enough time due to their busy schedules. They usually have only one day off in a week. This is why I prefer to have more holidays in a week. Relationships are one of the most important things in human life, and they can be negatively affected by a busy professional life.

Another reason is that having more relaxing days can help workers maintain a good and healthy life. Due to overwork, employees can experience pressure and stress in the workplace. When someone works for six days a week, it can negatively affect their mental health. Work is important, but it should not be the only priority in life. Humans need rest, peace of mind, time with their families, and good health.

In conclusion, I believe that workers in every sector should have at least two days off every week, whether they are Prime Ministers or factory workers. Moreover, their weekly salary should not be reduced because of an additional day off. A longer weekend can have positive effects on workers' relationships and mental health.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses the prompt clearly, maintaining a consistent position throughout. The arguments regarding personal relationships and mental health are relevant and logically extended. However, the essay could be improved by providing more specific examples or data to support the claims, rather than relying on personal anecdotes like 'I know many family members'. While the position is clear, the development is somewhat repetitive, and the conclusion introduces a new point about salary that was not previously discussed in the body paragraphs. To reach a higher band, ensure that all main points are introduced and developed within the body of the essay.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central theme, and the progression of ideas is easy to follow. Cohesive devices such as 'One of the main reasons', 'Another reason', and 'In conclusion' are used effectively to guide the reader. However, some transitions between sentences feel slightly mechanical, and the referencing could be more varied. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the overall structure supports the argument well, though the flow could be enhanced by using a wider variety of linking words to connect ideas more fluidly.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary used is generally appropriate and sufficient for the task. You demonstrate an ability to use topic-specific language such as 'fast-paced', 'professional life', and 'mental health'. However, the range is somewhat limited, and there is a reliance on simpler phrasing. To improve, try to incorporate more sophisticated collocations and less common lexical items. For example, instead of 'have problems', you could use 'experience interpersonal friction'. The word choice is accurate, and there are no spelling errors that impede communication, but the vocabulary lacks the precision and variety required for a higher band score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay displays a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. You show good control over basic grammar, and most sentences are error-free, which ensures clear communication. There are some minor issues, such as 'one day off in a week' (should be 'a week' or 'per week') and 'I completely disagree with the idea of a shorter weekend' (which contradicts your argument for a longer weekend). While you use some complex structures, they are not always used with full flexibility. Increasing the variety of complex grammatical forms, such as conditional clauses or passive voice, would help demonstrate a wider range.
