Student answer (Band 5.5)

IELTS Writing Task 2 kriterlerine uygun, tam 252 kelimelik (250 kelime sınırını geçen) Band 5.5 seviyesindeki metin:

Nowadays, many people talk about working days and weekends. Some people think that the working week should be shorter and workers should have a longer weekend. I agree with this idea because it is good for workers' health and their family life.

First of all, working five days a week is very tiring for many people. Many workers feel stressed because they work for long hours every day. If they have a longer weekend, like three days, they can rest more and reduce their stress. For example, my friend works five days a week and he is always tired on Sundays. If he gets three days off, he can feel much better and have more energy for work.

Secondly, a longer weekend gives people more time to spend with their family and friends. When people work five days, they only have two days to do housework, go shopping, and see their family. This time is not enough. With a three-day weekend, parents can spend more time with their children and do fun activities together. This makes families much happier.

However, some companies think that a shorter working week is bad for business because workers will do less work. But I think if workers are well rested, they can work faster and better during the working days.

In conclusion, I completely agree that the working week should be shorter and the weekend should be longer. It helps workers stay healthy and allows them to spend quality time with their families.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response addresses all parts of the task and maintains a clear position throughout. The arguments regarding health benefits and family time are relevant and logically developed. However, the development of ideas is somewhat basic; for instance, the counter-argument regarding business productivity is mentioned but not fully explored or nuanced. To reach a higher band, you should aim to provide more sophisticated analysis or deeper explanations for your points. The structure is sound, with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion, which ensures the reader understands your stance from the beginning.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay is organized logically, with each paragraph focusing on a distinct idea. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'First of all', 'Secondly', 'However', and 'In conclusion' to signal the progression of your argument. While these are effective, the flow is somewhat mechanical. To improve, try to use a wider variety of linking words and ensure that the transition between sentences is smoother. Referencing is generally clear, though some sentences feel slightly disconnected. Overall, the paragraphing is appropriate and contributes to the clarity of the response.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using words like 'productivity', 'quality time', and 'well-rested' appropriately. However, the vocabulary is somewhat repetitive and lacks the sophistication required for higher bands. There is a reliance on common, everyday language rather than more precise or academic terminology. While there are no significant spelling errors that impede communication, the range is limited. To improve, focus on incorporating more topic-specific collocations and synonyms to avoid repeating simple phrases like 'good for' or 'very tiring'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While most sentences are grammatically accurate, there is a lack of variety in the structures used. You rely heavily on simple 'subject-verb-object' patterns. There are very few errors, and those that do occur do not impede communication. To achieve a higher score, you should attempt to use a wider range of complex structures, such as conditional sentences (e.g., 'Were the working week to be reduced, companies might see...') or passive voice constructions, while maintaining your current level of accuracy.
