Student answer (Band 7.0)
The working days of the week should be shorter while weekends become elongated for workers. While I agree to an extent with this proposition, I also disagree to an extent.
One the one hand, I agree that there should be less working days in a week and longer weekends for the following reason. Firstly, shorter working days in a week and longer weekends will help workers rest more. Most jobs are demanding and employees that have such jobs deserve to have more adequate rest in order to maintain good health and still function effectively at work. Secondly, shorter working week and longer weekends will give people the more opportunity to attend to other important aspect of their lives, such as family. Most people do not have enough time for any other thing but work, because the existing 2-day weekend is only enough to prepare for the next week and not have quality time with family. For instance, most Nigerian bank workers leave so early and return home late and work during some weekends, the little time left would be to get ready for Monday.
On the other hand, I disagree with this proposition because it will have adverse effect on the economy. Some sectors such as banking are important for the economy since most businesses and individuals rely on banks to facilitate their transactions. Longer weekends will make movement of money to slow down. The economy will suffer as a result to this. Also, it will cause undue delay in the educational sector. Longer time will be required to complete an academic class. For instance, if it took 9 months, minus holidays, to complete an academic year with the existing working week, it will take about 11 to 12 months to complete it with shorter working week.
In conclusion, while I agree to an extent that the working week should be shorter and employees should have longer weekends because it will give more opportunity for rest; I also disagree to an extent because it will have adverse effects on the economy.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
You have addressed all parts of the task by presenting a balanced view on the proposal for a shorter working week. Your position is clear from the introduction to the conclusion. The ideas are relevant and supported by examples, such as the mention of Nigerian bank workers and the impact on the academic calendar. To reach a higher band, ensure that your arguments are fully developed; for instance, the point about the economy could be expanded by explaining exactly how reduced hours lead to lower productivity or GDP, rather than just stating it will suffer. Overall, you have provided a well-structured response that directly answers the prompt.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The essay is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a central theme, and you use cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Secondly', 'On the other hand', and 'In conclusion' to guide the reader. However, some transitions are slightly mechanical, and there are minor issues with referencing, such as 'the existing 2-day weekend is only enough to prepare for the next week and not have quality time'. Improving the flow between sentences would enhance the overall coherence. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different sides of the argument.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, allowing you to express your ideas clearly. You use topic-specific terms like 'facilitate their transactions' and 'academic year'. There are some instances of slightly unnatural phrasing, such as 'movement of money to slow down' instead of 'slowing down the circulation of capital'. While you attempt to use less common vocabulary, there is room for more precision and variety to reach a higher band. The vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning without any significant impediment to the reader.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While many sentences are clear, there are some grammatical inaccuracies, such as 'result to this' (should be 'result of this') and 'give people the more opportunity' (should be 'more opportunity'). There are also minor issues with article usage and prepositional phrases. Despite these errors, your meaning is consistently clear, and the errors do not impede communication. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and refining the use of articles in complex sentences.
