Student answer (Band 6.0)

Many people argue that the working days should be shorter and workers should have longer weekends. I strongly agree with this point of having long weekends, because it will bring us out of many life and work related challenges.

Firstly, people who are doing jobs for the whole week and have only one day off are facing health issues. Their health is detoriating, like muscle fatigue because of long sittings, eyesight weakness because of non-stop use of computer screens, hair fall as a result of stress, anxiety, depression. People have less time to engage with extracurricular activities, do exercise, hobbies and have minimal time to spend with their family. All these environmentally time-bound jobs lead people far from their normal life. They become robots. They go through this grind every day. In the end, they have nothing in their hands nor health, children and wealth etc.

On the other hand, the people who work only four days a week and have a long weekend. These people show fabulous results in their working sector, personal and social life. They will play an essential role in economic growth as well. For example, on the weekend, people have outings with families, it boosts their energy level, freshens their minds, realses their office work stress. As a result, they have become productive, they have generated new ideas to resolve office-related issues. When the mind is fresh, people have their clear thoughts, then they can achieve success in their work and it also impacts their personal life.

As a result, I came with the idea of longer weekends. This gives people free time, in which they try new things, explore their personality, invent new technologies and innovative ideas. In the future, these things benefit the local public and also play an important role in economic growth.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses the prompt by clearly stating a position in favor of shorter working weeks. The ideas are relevant, focusing on health benefits and increased productivity. However, the development is somewhat uneven. While the health consequences are listed, they are presented as a list rather than fully explored arguments. The second body paragraph provides a good link between rest and economic growth, but the final paragraph is quite brief and repetitive of the previous points. To reach a higher band, you should aim to provide more nuanced examples or deeper analysis of the societal implications of a shorter working week rather than just listing symptoms or benefits.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, and there is a clear progression of ideas from the problems of long hours to the benefits of shorter ones. You use some cohesive devices like 'Firstly', 'On the other hand', and 'As a result'. However, the use of these devices is sometimes mechanical or slightly inaccurate, such as starting a sentence with 'As a result' when it does not follow a preceding cause-effect relationship in the way intended. Additionally, some sentences are fragmented, which disrupts the flow of the argument. Improving the variety and precision of your linking words will help the essay read more naturally.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'extracurricular', 'productive', and 'innovative'. However, there are several instances of awkward word choice and minor errors, such as 'detoriating' (spelling), 'working sector' (collocation), and 'realses' (spelling). The phrase 'bring us out of' is also unnatural in this context. While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, it lacks the precision and flexibility required for higher bands. Focusing on learning collocations—words that naturally go together—will significantly improve the sophistication of your writing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'people who are doing jobs... are facing' (tense usage), 'I came with the idea' (preposition error), and sentence fragments like 'These people show fabulous results in their working sector, personal and social life.' (missing a verb or proper connection). While these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding your message, they occur frequently enough to impact the overall fluency. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and ensuring every sentence has a clear, complete structure.
