Student answer (Band 6.0)

It has become most debated topic that work loaded weeks should be shorter and the workers should be facilitated by long weekend. I completely agree with this viewpoint as longer weekend reduced the mental stress and offers the individual maximum time to spend with their families.

To commence with, one of the major reasons for supporting this viewpoint that is better mental health as extra free day can motivate the individuals to relax and reduce their stress, consequently, enhance the overall work-life balance and allows them focus on their physical health as they will have time to do exercise that will maintain their mental and physical fitness. Furthermore, they achieve more time to spend with their friends and family, resulting in stronger relation with them which is essential for their practical life. To illustrate, New Zeeland has reduced the working hours and follow the fixed working hour schedule that allows the workers to complete other household and personal tasks.

Another considerable reason is that it helps to improve overall economy as long weekend allows the workers to go for travel, shopping and restaurants. Moreover, it also plays a crucial role in higher productivity because worker feel more energetic and productive after long weekend. For instance, better mental and physical health allows then workers to perform effectively in their business or jobs, resulting in economic growth.

In conclusion, that extended weekend should be offer to workers because it has substantial benefits in overall economic, their relations, reduce their mental stress and improve their physical health.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt and maintains a clear position throughout. The ideas regarding mental health, work-life balance, and economic impact are relevant and supported with examples, such as the mention of New Zealand. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat superficial. For instance, the economic argument is brief and could have been expanded with more specific reasoning on how increased leisure time directly correlates to consumer spending. To reach a higher band, ensure that each supporting point is fully explored with more depth and nuance rather than listing several benefits in a single paragraph.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'To commence with', 'Furthermore', and 'In conclusion', which help guide the reader. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical or repetitive. Additionally, there are minor issues with referencing and sentence flow, such as the awkward phrasing in the first sentence: 'It has become most debated topic'. While the paragraphing is appropriate, the progression of ideas within paragraphs could be smoother to ensure a more natural flow of information.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the student to express their ideas clearly. There are attempts to use topic-specific vocabulary like 'work-life balance', 'economic growth', and 'productivity'. However, there are several instances of imprecise word choice and minor errors, such as 'work loaded weeks' instead of 'heavy workloads' or 'long working weeks', and 'New Zeeland' (spelling error). The range is sufficient for the task, but lacks the sophistication and precision required for higher bands. Expanding the range of collocations and ensuring accurate word forms would improve the score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors that affect the fluency of the writing. Examples include subject-verb agreement issues ('longer weekend reduced' should be 'reduces'), missing articles ('the' before 'better mental health'), and awkward phrasing ('that extended weekend should be offer'). While these errors do not impede communication, they are persistent throughout the text. To improve, the student should focus on verb tense consistency and ensuring that complex sentences are constructed with greater grammatical precision.
