Student answer (Band 6.0)

Nowadays, there is a debate whether the working week should be shorter or longer. Some people think that working week should be small, and i strongly agree that working week must be shorter and employees should be provided a long weekend because benefits of few working days outweigh longer week days.

Firstly, the shorter working week increase the productivity of the employees. When the employees take a long weekend off, and comes to the offices on new week they feel more focused and fresh. For instance, I am working as full stack developer in a IT company, when i do long break and come back to work i enjoy working on complex problem with greater enthusiasm. Therefore, a long weekend can help people to boost their energy before entering into a new working week.

Moreover, a longer weekend help people to spend more time with their families and loved ones. When people get more off days they have more time to take care of their parents, children and other dependents. Consequently, it will helps to make the bond between families more stronger. For example, when you take your children for an outing on weekends, they will be attracted more towards their parents. Hence, a long weekend helps family to live a enjoying and peaceful life. In contrast, some people may argue that a shorter weekend helps companies or people to achieve their milestones swiftly, as employees will be giving more time to work, but in my opinion it also comes with many disadvantages.

In conclusion, working on few days in a week and taking longer weekends increases the productivity and helps families to live a happy life.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses the prompt clearly and maintains a consistent position throughout. The arguments regarding productivity and family life are relevant and supported by personal examples, such as the mention of being a full-stack developer. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited; the points could be extended further to reach a higher band. For instance, the counter-argument regarding company milestones is introduced but not fully explored or refuted with sufficient depth. Overall, the response covers all parts of the task well, but the depth of analysis remains at a functional level rather than a fully developed one.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Moreover', 'Consequently', and 'In contrast' are used to guide the reader through the arguments. However, the use of these devices is occasionally mechanical, and there are minor issues with referencing and flow. For example, the transition between the second and third paragraphs could be smoother. Paragraphing is used appropriately, and the progression of ideas is generally clear, though the internal structure of the paragraphs could benefit from more sophisticated linking.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to convey their meaning clearly. There is some attempt to use topic-specific language like 'full stack developer' and 'complex problem'. However, the range is somewhat limited, and there are instances of imprecise word choice, such as 'working week should be small' (instead of 'shorter') and 'live a enjoying and peaceful life' (instead of 'enjoyable'). The vocabulary is generally functional but lacks the flexibility and precision required for a higher band score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors that persist throughout the text. Examples include subject-verb agreement issues ('the shorter working week increase', 'a longer weekend help', 'it will helps') and article usage errors ('in a IT company'). While these errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. A greater focus on proofreading for basic grammatical accuracy would significantly improve the quality of the writing.
