Student answer (Band 6.5)

It is argued that a shorter working week typically by reducing the standard five-day work model to four or four-and-a-half days, should be considered in the workplaces. I completely agree with the idea and the proposal of increasing weekends is worth embracing.

There are a number of reasons why I believe working days should be reduced. One possible reason is that a short workweek creates the space for creativity and innovation. A person can get the required amount of time when he could learn or think something out of the box. It will help them to progress in their life and their workplace. Moreover, during the weekend they can develop many interpersonal skills or technological skills. For example, my colleague who works in the marketing department recently enrolled in an online course. The course is based on AI in digital marketing. Although he had no knowledge of science and technology, he mastered the course and now his career is at its peak by applying the skill.

In addition, a longer weekend will help a person to build family and social bonds. While people are getting detached from each other because of the workload, they will be able to spend more time with their family by taking a break from work. Furthermore, it will also help workers to reduce stress and anxiety. Working for a long time puts the employee under pressure, whereas allowing them to get an extra day without working will give them mental refreshment.

In conclusion, considering the factors discussed above, I believe a shorter workweek is not just about less work; it is about smarter work that values human potential beyond the office.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response clearly addresses the prompt and maintains a consistent position throughout. The arguments regarding creativity, skill development, and social/mental well-being are relevant and logically extended. The example of the colleague in the marketing department provides good support for the idea of skill acquisition. While the ideas are well-developed, the essay could be improved by exploring potential counter-arguments or addressing the feasibility of such a change to reach a higher level of depth. Overall, the response is well-focused and meets all requirements of the task.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion. Each paragraph has a central theme, and the progression of ideas is easy to follow. Cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'In addition', and 'Furthermore' are used effectively to link ideas. However, some transitions are slightly mechanical, and the referencing could be more varied to improve the flow. Paragraphing is used appropriately, and the overall structure supports the argument well.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally appropriate and sufficient for the task. The student uses some effective collocations like 'interpersonal skills', 'mental refreshment', and 'human potential'. There are occasional minor inaccuracies, such as 'mastered the course' (which is acceptable but could be more precise) and 'no knowledge of science and technology' (which is slightly vague). The range is adequate to convey ideas clearly, but the use of less common or more sophisticated lexical items is somewhat limited, which prevents a higher score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The student demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Most sentences are clear and error-free, though there are occasional slips, such as 'a person can get the required amount of time when he could learn' (which is slightly awkward) and 'while people are getting detached' (where 'as' or 'because' might be more natural). Punctuation is generally accurate, and the grammatical errors present do not impede communication. To achieve a higher band, the student should aim for more variety in complex structures and greater precision in tense usage.
