Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is often argued that the traditional five-day working week should be reduced so that employees can enjoy a longer weekend. I completely agree with this view because a shorter working week can improve workers’ productivity while also allowing them to maintain a healthier work-life balance.

Firstly, short working hours will make employees more productive and focused. Workers get more rest, they feel fresh and energetic and as result after weekend, they will work more hardly with peaceful mind and in a positive way. This will boast their mood and motivate them to remain focused. Long working days with same routine leads to tiredness and lack of concentration. In contrast, if employees get three days off, they will become fresh and will able to work efficiently. For example, an employee who has a three-day weekend may be able to relax properly and start the following week feeling refreshed, which can help them complete their tasks more efficiently.

Secondly, a longer weekend will have a positive effect on workers personal life. They would have more time to spend with their families, pursue hobbies, exercise or simple relax. This will help them to reduce stress, anxiety and to maintain a balance between personal and professional life. For instance, parents could use the extra day to spend quality time with their children or participate in family activities, which may strengthen their relationships.

Conclusively, I strongly believe that the working week should be shorter and the weekend longer. This would not only help employees become more productive but would also give them more opportunities to rest, spend time with their families and enjoy a healthier lifestyle.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

You have clearly addressed the prompt by taking a firm position and supporting it with two distinct arguments: productivity and work-life balance. The ideas are relevant and logically extended. To reach a higher band, ensure that your examples are slightly more specific; for instance, instead of a general employee, you could refer to a specific industry or sector to add depth. Overall, the response is well-structured and fully addresses all parts of the task, meeting the requirements for a Band 7.0.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. You use cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'In contrast', and 'Conclusively' to guide the reader. However, some transitions are slightly mechanical, and the flow between sentences could be smoother. For example, the transition between 'Workers get more rest' and 'they feel fresh' could be improved by using more sophisticated linking words. Paragraphing is used appropriately, and there is a clear progression of ideas throughout the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'work-life balance', 'efficiently', and 'professional life'. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'work more hardly' (should be 'work harder') and 'boast their mood' (should be 'boost their mood'). To achieve a higher band, try to incorporate more precise, less common lexical items and ensure collocations are natural. The current vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly without difficulty.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While your meaning is always clear, there are recurring grammatical errors, such as 'will able to work' (missing 'be') and 'with same routine' (missing an article). Additionally, there are minor punctuation and phrasing issues. While these errors do not impede communication, they prevent the essay from reaching the higher bands where error-free sentences are the majority. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of modal verbs will help improve your accuracy.
