Student answer (Band 5.5)

It is often argued that working days should be reduced to enhance the duration of the weekend for the workers. Although, some people might disagree with the statement, I completely agree. Not only because the longer weekend will provide mental relaxation, enhance productivity after the monotonous week and to control the alarming increase in mental health issues but also workers can spend more time with their families and friends. This essay essay will explore why workers should be given long weekend.

There are multiple reasons associated with it. Firstly, the workers will feel relaxed after a boredom weekend. when a person do a 9.00 am to 5.00 pm job, the monotonous office work made him like a machine. Working in an office in front of the computer, not only affect your eyes but also impact on your mental health. This tough routine needs a relaxing phase when a person feel relax and can charge his body for the coming work. For example, Many multinational companies give three days off to ensure the good health of their employees.

Secondly, the workers start feeling absent during their duty time due to tiredness in their body. The person who has to travel to his office and work for twelve hours and then travel back to his home. During this whole duration, he has to eat his meal and also give time to his family. After a few time, he will become a mentally ill person due to this hectic routine. Take an example of USA, where a psychiatrist do routine checkup for the better health of the workers. There is a separate department of consultation in every company for the care of workers.

Finally, Workers spend a lot of time away from their friends and families. Due to this gap, their social life become zero and they started feeling alone. This leads towards psychological issues and ultimately towards suicidal thoughts. To cope this issue, weekend days should be increased to strengthen the social linkage of employees.

To conclude, I believe that weekend days should be enhanced not only to provide relaxation to workers from monotonous routine and to control mental health issues but also to spend more time with families and friends.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response addresses the prompt and maintains a clear position throughout. The ideas are relevant, focusing on mental health, productivity, and social well-being. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat repetitive and relies on generalizations. For instance, the claim that workers become 'mentally ill' due to a 9-to-5 routine is an overstatement that lacks nuance. While the essay covers all parts of the task, the supporting arguments could be more sophisticated and better linked to the core premise of a shorter working week rather than just general workplace stress. The conclusion effectively summarizes the main points, maintaining the established position.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, each with a clear topic sentence. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'Firstly', 'Secondly', and 'Finally', which help guide the reader. However, some transitions are mechanical or slightly awkward, such as 'After a few time' or 'To cope this issue'. The progression of ideas is generally clear, but the internal structure of some paragraphs is slightly disjointed due to grammatical errors that interrupt the flow. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct arguments, which helps the overall readability of the response.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks precision and variety. The student uses basic terms like 'good health', 'tough routine', and 'mentally ill person' repeatedly. There are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'boredom weekend' (instead of 'boring weekend') and 'social linkage' (instead of 'social connections'). While the meaning is generally clear, the range of vocabulary is limited, and the student struggles to use less common lexical items effectively. More sophisticated synonyms for 'tiredness', 'stress', and 'work' would improve the quality of the writing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. Common issues include subject-verb agreement ('a person do', 'a psychiatrist do'), article usage ('Take an example of USA'), and prepositional errors ('impact on your mental health'). Punctuation is generally functional, but there are errors in sentence boundaries and comma usage. While the errors do not prevent the reader from understanding the main points, they are frequent enough to suggest a lack of control over more complex grammatical forms.
