Student answer (Band 6.0)

The working week should be shorter and workers should have a longer weekend. I agree with this idea of workers having a longer week after a shorter working week.

In my view, a worker who has to spend several hours at a workplace is most of the time involved in office activities and responsibilities. This way longer working week leaves a very little room for a worker to do his personal chores, activities and manage a life with their family during the working week or even at the weekend. For example, I remember during my first job at a content writing company, I had to work six days a week and around 10 to 12 hours a day. Even though it was a remote job, still because of the working hours I used to be very much busy with my work that I had to miss so many of my family events. I was working with my studies, so it was very hard for me to manage my university assignments during just one day off. During the weekend, I also used to be hardly able to have enough rest to start the new week, which is why I used to be very tired during the working days.

Shorter working hours help a worker to maintain a healthy work-life balance. It lets people to have sufficient time to spend with their family, do their personal activities like manage their school work if they are working while doing studies, or pursue their hobbies in leisure time that in the end results in a happy and health mind. It also boosts the productivity of workers, which proves the best of both worlds as for the worker as well as for the company for which they are working. I would like to mention a personal reference as I switched company and started a job at a new organization. Here in this company, I have to work 5 days a week and 8 hours per day, which helped me to manage my studies as well as pursue my hobby of graphic designing. I used to take classes for graphic designing during the weekends and was even able to start and manage a small side business. During the weekend as I have enough time to complete my university tasks and relax so by the start of every week, I am always very excited and enthusiastic about going to my work. I even just recently got a recognition of best employee of the month from my company as my project got published in a highly recognized journal.

In conclusion, I totally agree that companies should have shorter working hours and a longer weekend which will not just help the workers to have a healthy work-life balance and a sound mind but also the company to get more efficiency and productivity from their workers.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, clearly stating an agreement with the proposal for a shorter working week. The position is consistent throughout the essay. The ideas are well-developed, particularly through the use of personal anecdotes which serve as relevant examples to support the argument. The essay explores both the personal benefits, such as work-life balance and mental health, and the professional benefits, such as increased productivity and employee recognition. The arguments are extended logically, and the conclusion effectively summarizes the main points. The response is fully relevant and demonstrates a clear understanding of the task requirements.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central theme, such as the negative impact of long hours and the positive impact of a balanced schedule. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'In my view,' 'For example,' 'It also boosts,' and 'In conclusion,' which help guide the reader. However, some transitions are slightly repetitive or mechanical, and the flow between sentences could be smoother in places. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas, contributing to the overall coherence of the response.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The student demonstrates a sufficient range of vocabulary to discuss the topic with some precision. Phrases like 'work-life balance,' 'highly recognized journal,' and 'enthusiastic' show an ability to use topic-specific language. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'results in a happy and health mind' (should be 'healthy') and 'best of both worlds as for the worker' (awkward phrasing). While the vocabulary is generally adequate and allows for clear communication, it lacks the sophisticated, idiomatic control required for higher band scores.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There is a good attempt at complex sentences, such as 'Even though it was a remote job, still because of the working hours I used to be very much busy with my work that I had to miss so many of my family events.' However, there are frequent minor errors in grammar and punctuation, such as 'It lets people to have' (should be 'lets people have') and 'results in a happy and health mind.' These errors do not impede communication, but they are noticeable and prevent the writing from reaching a higher level of grammatical control.
