Student answer (Band 6.0)

In most countries, workers are busy six days a week from morning till evening with long weeks and shorter weekends.

I totally agree that work hours per week should be reduced and employees should be given more time on weekends to recuperate because that will help them in improving work life balance and proper time to rest over the weekends improving their overall mental and physical health. This essay will look at these reasons in detail.

As the world is getting increasingly competitive, companies are making its employees work harder and longer sparing less time for them to spend with their families and keep up with social commitments. People are so exhausted by the end of the day that they have no emotional and physical strength to socialize which in turn affect their personal relationships causing more stress and worry. For example, last week, I was so exhausted by the end of my long day that I had to take raincheck on my friend's house-warming party, that put me in a very tight spot with her as she made all the preparations already and had her expectations. Therefore, reducing office timings will help in fulfilling personal responsibilities and maintaining social ties.

Another reason to reduce work hours is that will give enough time to the workers to recuperate through the weekends and will be in better mental and physical health to complete the tasks increasing their productivity. Those who are busy the whole week will have enough time to rest as well as complete any pending tasks if the weekends are long enough so they wouldn't be distracted during work hours and show better results. For example, if one has enough things to do at home and there is workplace pressure too, that person won't be able to do his absolute best or might mess up his mundane tasks.

In conclusion, offices should make their work schedules that are less physically and mentally taxing to increase quality over quantity at the workplace and the workers will get time to relax and keep a balance between work and personal life. This mindset will help in improving the overall workforce productivity and in turn the economy of the businesses.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, clearly stating a position in favor of shorter work weeks. The ideas are relevant and generally well-developed. The first body paragraph provides a personal example to illustrate the impact of long hours on social life, while the second body paragraph discusses the link between rest and productivity. However, the development could be more sophisticated; the argument regarding productivity is slightly repetitive and could benefit from more nuanced analysis. Overall, the position is consistent and the main ideas are clearly presented, meeting the requirements for a Band 7.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Cohesive devices such as 'Therefore', 'Another reason', and 'In conclusion' are used effectively to guide the reader. Paragraphing is appropriate, with each paragraph focusing on a central theme. While the progression of ideas is generally smooth, there are occasional instances where the flow feels slightly mechanical, and some referencing could be more precise. Nevertheless, the logical structure is clear throughout, and the essay demonstrates a good command of organizational features.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The range of vocabulary is sufficient to convey ideas with precision. The student uses topic-specific language such as 'recuperate', 'social commitments', and 'taxing'. There are some minor inaccuracies in collocation and word choice, such as 'take raincheck' (should be 'take a raincheck') and 'make their work schedules that are less' (should be 'design work schedules that are less'). Despite these occasional slips, the vocabulary is adequate for the task and allows for a clear expression of the argument, fitting the criteria for a Band 6.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There is a good attempt at using complex sentences, such as 'Those who are busy the whole week will have enough time to rest as well as complete any pending tasks if the weekends are long enough'. However, there are recurring grammatical errors, particularly with subject-verb agreement and article usage (e.g., 'that will help them in improving work life balance and proper time to rest'). While these errors are noticeable, they do not impede communication or cause confusion for the reader.
