Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response addresses the prompt by clearly stating an agreement with the proposal for a shorter working week. The ideas are relevant, focusing on family time, stress reduction, and leisure activities. However, the development is somewhat repetitive and lacks depth. For instance, the argument regarding 'pending work' in the second body paragraph contradicts the initial premise of having more leisure time, which weakens the logical flow. While the position is clear throughout, the supporting examples are somewhat generic and could be more specific to reach a higher band. Overall, the response covers the requirements but remains at a basic level of development.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is organised into logical paragraphs, and there is a clear introduction and conclusion. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'To instigate with', 'Apart from this', and 'In conclusion'. However, some of these transitions are non-standard or awkward (e.g., 'To instigate with' is not a natural English collocation). Additionally, the referencing is occasionally repetitive, with the word 'there' (used incorrectly for 'their') appearing frequently, which disrupts the flow. Paragraphing is present, but the progression of ideas within the paragraphs could be smoother to ensure a more professional academic tone.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task but lacks the precision and variety required for higher bands. There is a persistent error in word choice, specifically the confusion between 'there' and 'their' throughout the text. While the student attempts some academic vocabulary like 'vindication', 'instigate', and 'ingeminate', these are often used incorrectly or in an unnatural context. The range is sufficient to communicate the main points, but the frequent misuse of basic pronouns and the limited variety of collocations prevent a higher score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are frequent grammatical errors that, while they do not completely impede communication, are noticeable. Common issues include subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'workers should provide long weekends' instead of 'be provided with'), incorrect preposition usage, and persistent spelling/homophone errors (e.g., 'there' instead of 'their'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, with unnecessary spaces before commas. The control of grammar is limited, and the frequency of errors prevents the text from reaching a higher band.
