Student answer (Band 6.0)

There has been a considerable debate concerning the length of the working week and weekend. I agree with the stance that the length of the work week should be curtailed and weekends should be extented. However, to facilitate this, proper plans and cooperations should in place. Otherwise, companies will suffer from continuous lossed and setbacks.

In most countries, workers are required to work 40 hours a week. Thus, if the companies introduce flextime, it will benefit their employees in a number of ways. Flextime is a concept where workers are allowed to work in different course of the weekdays which allow them to satiate the weekly requirement of 40 hours. They can rearrage their work schedule to accommodate extended weekends. For example, they may work for 8 hours daily for 5 days and enjoy two days of weekends or 10 hours daily for 4 days to enjoy a holiday of 3 days.

Flextime allows employees to strike a balance between their personal and professional lives. In today's consumerist society, people are surrounded with numerous reponsibilities. Elongated work days abstrain people from performing duties of other sectors. This problem is even more intense in the case of working mothers, who not only have to take care of their children but also manage their household activities. Thus, prolonged weekend allow people to manage their home and office simultanously.

Another benefit is that people get bored and mentally enhausted when they need to work throughout the week. Long weekend allows people to take a break from the hustle and bustle of work place and divert their mind to somewhere else. It also allows people to go on a short trip which reenergize them. As a result of which, people become more dedicated and result in increased productivity and quality.

Admittedly, compressed work week may hamper the quality of the work and encourage people to work delibaretly. On top of that, employees will encounter more workload and exhaustion by working for long hours. This in turn affect the companies productivity and image. Therefore, proper plan with overvision are required to minimize these issues.

Entended weekes bring considerable benefits if admoinistered properly.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, clearly stating an agreement with the proposal for a shorter working week. The ideas are relevant and generally well-developed, particularly the discussion on work-life balance and the mention of working mothers. However, the development is slightly uneven; while the benefits are explored in detail, the counter-argument regarding potential productivity loss is somewhat brief. The position is consistent throughout the essay, and the conclusion effectively summarizes the main point. To reach a higher band, ensure that the counter-arguments are explored with the same depth as the supporting arguments.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a central theme, and the transition between paragraphs is generally smooth. Cohesive devices such as 'Thus', 'For example', and 'On top of that' are used effectively to link sentences and ideas. However, there are occasional instances where the flow feels slightly mechanical, and some referencing could be more precise. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion, which helps the reader follow the argument without difficulty.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate and allows for the expression of ideas with reasonable precision. There are attempts to use less common items such as 'satiate', 'consumerist', and 'hustle and bustle', which demonstrate a good range. However, there are several spelling errors ('lossed', 'rearrage', 'reponsibilities', 'abstrain', 'enhausted', 'delibaretly', 'admoinistered') and some minor word choice inaccuracies ('overvision' instead of 'oversight'). These errors do not impede communication, but they do prevent the essay from reaching a higher band for lexical resource.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There is a good attempt at using conditional structures and complex clauses to explain the benefits of flextime. However, there are frequent grammatical errors, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('proper plans and cooperations should in place', 'prolonged weekend allow') and article usage errors. While these errors are noticeable, they rarely impede the reader's understanding of the message. To improve, focus on proofreading for basic grammatical accuracy and ensuring consistent verb forms.
