Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is argued that working week should be shortened, giving employees more time to enjoy their weekend. Although relaxation is important for worker's mental well being, I disagree with this view because if working week is shortened, most tasks may not be completed on time, and workers might become less productive over time.

One of the main drawbacks of shortening the week is that employees may not have sufficient time to complete their responsibilities. If they have fewer working days, they may have to complete the same amount of work in less time. As a result, some of the tasks could be delayed , which may negatively affect the productivity of organization. For example, in offices where employees have strict deadlines, reducing the number of working days could make it difficult to finish their projects on time. In long term, lower productivity across different companies could slow down the economic growth of a country.

Another main reason why I disagree with the idea of a longer weekend is that it may reduce worker's productivity over time. If employees have too much time away from work, they may become accustomed to be more relaxed routine and find it difficult to maintain a consistent working schedule. For example, if employees have an extra day off every week, they may get used to a relaxed lifestyle and find it difficult when return to work. Consequently, they may become less motivated when return to work.

In conclusion, although longer weekend provide workers with more time to relax, I believe that short working week could negatively affect companies' productivity and workers efficiency in long term.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses the prompt clearly and maintains a consistent position throughout. You have provided two distinct arguments—workload management and worker motivation—to support your disagreement with the proposal. The ideas are relevant and logically extended. To reach a higher band, ensure that your examples are slightly more specific; for instance, instead of mentioning 'offices' in general, you could briefly describe a specific industry or scenario where strict deadlines are non-negotiable. Overall, the task is fully addressed with a clear, well-supported argument.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. You use cohesive devices such as 'One of the main drawbacks,' 'As a result,' and 'In conclusion' to guide the reader through your argument. However, the flow is occasionally slightly mechanical. To improve, try to vary your transition signals and ensure that referencing is always precise. For example, in the second paragraph, the transition between the idea of 'too much time away' and 'relaxed lifestyle' is clear, but the paragraphing could be enhanced by ensuring each paragraph focuses strictly on one central theme without overlap.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your ideas clearly. Phrases like 'accustomed to,' 'consistent working schedule,' and 'negatively affect' are used appropriately. There are some minor issues with word choice and articles, such as 'productivity of organization' (should be 'the organization') and 'relaxed routine' (should be 'a relaxed routine'). To achieve a higher score, aim to incorporate more sophisticated collocations and less common lexical items. For example, instead of 'slow down the economic growth,' you could use 'hinder economic expansion.'

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this level. However, there are several recurring grammatical errors, particularly with articles ('the working week,' 'a country') and verb forms ('when return to work' should be 'when returning to work'). While these errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. Focus on proofreading for subject-verb agreement and article usage. Strengthening your control over complex sentence structures by ensuring they are error-free will help you move into the higher band range.
