Student answer (Band 7.0)
It is often argued that employees should work fewer days and have a longer weekend. I completely agree with this view because reducing working hours can improve employees’ well-being and increase their productivity.
One major reason to support a shorter working week is that it can improve workers’ physical and mental well-being. Long working hours can make employees tired and stressed, while an extra day off gives them more time to rest and spend with their families. This can also help them maintain a better balance between their professional and personal lives. For example, workers with a three-day weekend may return to work feeling more refreshed and motivated. This can reduce burnout and help employees maintain their motivation over a longer period.
Another important benefit of a shorter working week is that it can increase employees’ productivity. When workers have enough time to rest, they are more likely to feel focused and motivated during working hours. They may also experience less stress and exhaustion, allowing them to concentrate better on their responsibilities. For instance, employees who receive an additional day off may return to work with more energy and complete their tasks more efficiently. As a result, companies may benefit from having healthier and more productive employees. In the long term, this could improve the overall performance of businesses and reduce employee turnover.
In conclusion, I strongly agree that the working week should be shorter and employees should have a longer weekend. This would allow workers to maintain better physical and mental well-being while also helping them become more focused, motivated, and productive at work.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The response fully addresses the prompt by clearly stating a position in the introduction and maintaining it throughout the essay. The arguments regarding physical/mental well-being and increased productivity are relevant and well-developed. Each paragraph provides a clear topic sentence followed by supporting explanations and examples, such as the mention of burnout and the link between rest and focus. The ideas are extended sufficiently to meet the requirements of the task, and the conclusion effectively summarises the main points without introducing new information. The response is balanced and directly answers the question asked.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The essay is logically organised with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph focuses on a distinct central theme, and the transition between the introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion is smooth. Cohesive devices such as 'One major reason', 'Another important benefit', and 'As a result' are used effectively to guide the reader. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different arguments. The flow of information is natural, and referencing is clear throughout the text, ensuring that the reader can easily follow the writer's line of reasoning.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
The vocabulary is sufficient and appropriate for the task. The writer uses a range of topic-specific terms such as 'well-being', 'burnout', 'professional and personal lives', and 'employee turnover'. While the vocabulary is accurate and conveys meaning clearly, it lacks a high degree of sophistication or 'less common' lexical items that would elevate it to a band 8 or 9. However, the word choice is precise, and there are no errors in spelling or collocation that impede communication or cause confusion for the reader.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
The essay demonstrates a good command of grammatical structures. There is a mix of simple and complex sentences, such as 'When workers have enough time to rest, they are more likely to feel focused and motivated during working hours.' Punctuation is accurate, and the majority of sentences are error-free. While the range of structures is solid, it does not consistently display the 'wide range' of complex forms required for the highest bands. Nevertheless, the control over grammar is strong, and there are no significant errors that affect the clarity of the message.
