Student answer (Band 6.0)

Indubitably, in the current era, the working culture is getting very stressed due to long working days in a week. To solve this problem and many others, a number of working days ought to be less to get a long weekend. I strongly agree with this and my opinion will be articulated in subsequent paragraphs.

At the outset, there are numerous reasons for having a long weekend by minimising the working days and first and foremost is to enhance skills. To describe it more, if individuals gets multiple days off then they can work to sharpen their skills and also can learn new skills to get a promotion and higher pay in the future. For example, for a managerial level job, multiple skills are required and a person has only a weekend to learn thus that person will easily manage and utilise effectively the days off.

Moreover, an employee can go on a long holiday. To be more precise, on short weekends going on trips outside town with family is difficult. So, family can spend more time with each other and can go on a short trip to outstation to explore more places. Furthermore, for some people, a job is only a way to earn and they do it without having an interest in it, as a result, it is hard to follow their own passion because of lack of time but if that person gets long weekend, then that time can be spent by following passion and working on hobbies.

To recapitulate, there are various reasons that a working week should be shorter and workers should have a longer weekend such as learning new skills, spending more time with family members and following their passion or dreams.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt by taking a clear stance that the working week should be shorter to allow for a longer weekend. The position is maintained throughout the essay. Ideas are extended and supported, such as discussing skill enhancement and family time, though there is a slight tendency to over-generalise. For instance, the argument about skill development is introduced well, but the supporting examples remain somewhat repetitive and lack deeper elaboration. Key points like going on holidays and pursuing personal hobbies are presented clearly. Overall, the task is successfully fulfilled, aligning well with the requirements for a Band 7 performance under this criterion.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay displays clear logical organisation and a progression of ideas from introduction to conclusion. Paragraphing is utilised appropriately, with distinct body paragraphs separating different arguments such as skill enhancement and personal leisure. Cohesive devices are employed reasonably well, as seen with transition markers like 'Moreover', 'Furthermore', and 'To recapitulate'. However, some referencing is slightly clunky, and certain cohesive links feel mechanical or overly repetitive, such as 'To describe it more' and 'To be more precise'. Paragraph internal cohesion could be smoother, but the logical structure remains easy to follow throughout, justifying a Band 6.5 or solid Band 7 rating.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The writer demonstrates a sufficient range of vocabulary to allow for flexibility and precision on the topic. Words and phrases such as 'indubitably', 'minimising', 'enhancement', and 'managerial level' show an attempt to use less common lexical items with some awareness of style. However, there are notable collocation and phrasing errors that impede natural flow, such as 'getting very stressed due to long working days in a week', 'a number of working days ought to be less', and 'trip to outstation'. These errors in word choice and lexical control prevent the response from reaching higher band levels, placing it comfortably within the Band 6 category.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating conditional structures like 'if individuals gets multiple days off then they can work...'. However, there are frequent grammatical errors and slips in agreement and prepositional use, such as 'if individuals gets' (subject-verb agreement error), 'a person has only a weekend to learn thus that person will easily manage', and 'spent by following passion'. Punctuation is also occasionally weak, resulting in run-on sentences. While these errors do not severely impede communication, they persist too frequently for a Band 7, demonstrating the characteristics of a Band 6 performance.
